Attorney General William Tong today joined a coalition of 21 attorneys general sending a letter to members of Congress, urging them to pass legislation generally prohibiting federal immigration agents from wearing masks to conceal their identity and requiring them to show their identification and agency-identifying insignia.

The coalition expressed concern over "incidents involving masked Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officers dressed in plainclothes and driving unmarked vehicles detaining individuals on streets, at homes, workplaces, and courthouses."

ICE agents do not wear masks for secrecy, of course, they were masks to protect agents from targeted violence and other threats during and after enforcement operations.

Nonetheless, the coalition criticized ICE’s "opaque conduct as a stark departure from the transparency and accountability long practiced by traditional law enforcement agencies." These tactics, the letter states, "pose significant safety risks and instill fear rather than foster public safety."

“These masked commandos in unmarked vans trigger dangerous panic and confusion. The possibility of a misunderstanding puts both officers and civilians at needless risk. There is zero need for these hyper-aggressive tactics," complained Tong, who appeared more concerned about the safety of illegal immigrants than he is about the safety of legal residents of Connecticut. "It’s more performative cruelty from a weak administration trying to look tough and control through fear. Congress can and must act to protect public safety.”

The coalition wants Congress to pass legislation to that would prioritize politics over the safety of federal immigration agents, ignore the reality of growing threats against ICE agents, and undermine the Department of Homeland Security's ability to carry out enforcement operations.

"Instead of trying to amend immigration law, some members of Congress want to create a new law that puts our officers, agents and families in GRAVE DANGER," wrote ICE on X, obviously concerned about the safety of ICE agents.

When President Donald Trump was asked if he would ever sign a bill that would prevent ICE agents from wearing masks, he said that the people who want to do that, like Tong, obviously "hate our country."

He went on to defend the tremendous work ICE is doing to remove criminal illegals from the U.S., and pointed out that no one ever complains about the masked protesters, like those at Harvard for instance.

"But when a Patriot who works for ICE or Border Patrol puts a mask on so that they won't recognize him and his family so they can lead a little bit of a normal life after having worked so hard and so dangerously," Trump said, pointing out the hypocrisy. "I want to do whatever is necessary to protect our great law enforcement people."

In sending this letter, Attorney General Tong joins the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

As a reminder, here are some of the recent illegals picked up in Connecticut, thanks to ICE's hard work and dedication to helping keep American citizens safe.
