President Donald Trump kept another one of his promises last night when he signed an executive order to protect the integrity of US elections.

The Order says the US fails to enforce "basic and necessary election protections" that are commonplace elsewhere in the world, like prohibiting States from counting ballots received after Election Day or prohibiting non-citizens from registering to vote. Not only that, but under the Biden administration, States were "actively prevented from removing aliens" from the voter rolls.

The Order also highlights federal law 52 U.S.C. 30121 which prohibits foreign nationals from participating in federal, state or local elections by making any contributions or expenditures. But foreign nationals and NGOs have "taken advantage of loopholes" that allow them to spend "millions of dollars through conduit contributions and ballot-initiative-related expenditures."

Voting would require proof of citizenship using a proper ID (e.g., passport, a "REAL ID", a US military ID that indicates citizenship, or a valid federal or state government issued photo ID along with proof of citizenship) -- that means no more bonus "savings club" cards or theater membership cards to vote!

Voting methods would be required to produce a "voter-verifiable paper record" that enables voters to check their votes and protect against fraud or mistake.

Details on prosecuting election crimes, particularly relevant in Connecticut considering the rampant election integrity issues uncovered in Bridgeport, are also outlined.

Oh, and if you don't want to comply with the federal laws set forth in 52 U.S.C. 21145, including the requirement for documentary proof of US citizenship, then you risk losing federal funding.

This effort to protect election integrity has caused CT AG Tong a tremendous amount of stress already.

He's arguing that Trump wants to "illegally defund states who do not comply with his list of voter suppression measures."

“This is a lawless attempt to suppress and manipulate free and fair elections across the United States, from an unhinged aspiring dictator still seeking to rewrite history to erase his defeat more than four years ago. Since 1788—plainly spelled out in Article 1 of the Constitution and repeatedly affirmed by the Supreme Court—elections are run by the states. This is about Donald Trump trying to pick and choose who gets to vote in this country, and that is not what democracy means. We are working closely with states across the country and are evaluating all legal options to protect our constitutional authority to conduct our elections in a manner that respects voters’ rights and our need for safe and secure elections,” said Attorney General Tong.

More than 70 countries already have voter ID laws, which implies that requiring voter ID does not amount to voter suppression, as Tong claims.

It's how you maintain election integrity.
