NOW FOR THE REASONS WHY:
More pressure is being put on the largest taking in Connecticut - HB 5002.
For many Nutmeggers, CT usually makes the NY Post for Nightmares or a Page Six spotting.
Well, CT is back on the the Post’s radar - picking up an Op-Ed by Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York and co-founder of the Committee to Save Our City.
HB5002 was passed at 2AM - talk about a Sleepless Night in the Senate - A “homlessness” housing bill that was a 160 page omnibus bill that is a taking of your property rights and impacts the biggest asset - YOUR HOME.
Instead of paving paradise and putting up a parking lot - your neighbor can turn your quaint neighborhood into a New Rochelle or White Plains with large developments (of 9 units in the place of a single residence with no need to provide parking) with no say by your planning and zoning (the last line of defense). Just imagine 9 more cars from one of your next-door neighbors.
It is an “as of right” piece of legislation and if you challenge the developers, taxpayers may get to pay their legal bills.
It is also logistically a nightmare and creates all sorts of unfunded mandates like how to deal with population challenges and limited resources - sewer, water, schooling, emergency response….
This does not solve for the “Needs of Homeless Persons.”
While this is a Democrat Bill of your elected representatives in a democrat controlled House, Senate, and Hartford (Governor, Lt. Governor, AG, SOTS….), there are plenty of local Democrat Selectmen that think this is horrible for their community and want to look to common sense.
Fairfield has been decimated by 8-30g and we will talk more about that another day. They have had so many developments that they were just granted a 4-year moratorium - well HB 5002 stops that for more of Fairfield’s “fair share”. First Selectmen Gerber (D) is fed up as well watching his town fall to 8-30g and HB 5002.
It is in Ned’s hands, and without more pressure, he may just sign it rather than veto it.
Connecticut has fallen where New York stood up to a similar taking by Governor Hochul.
Remember the driver of DeSegregate CT is funded out of NEW YORK CITY: it is part of the Regional Plan Association (“RPA”), a NYC based non-profit (engaging in lobbying efforts) with most of their board members based in NYC, NJ and to a lesser extent CT. So NYC is telling Hartford what to do - here is a previous article on that.
As Connecticut gets out of the gate with bad legislation, Transit Oriented Development was the early mover.
Remember those Pace Salsa Commercials -
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
It is time to be that Cowboy or Cowgirl from Connecticut (as those commercials were the Texans) and turn up the heat by:
We aren’t backing down and neither should YOU.
Stand up to Lamont, Stand Up to Hartford and TAKE YOUR TOWNS BACK
