Sherry Zane of Hebron, CT, the Interim Director for Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies in the University of Connecticut's Department of Social and Critical Inquiry, was charged with first-degree larceny according to a new release from University Police.
UConn's investigation revealed the 56-year-old had used university funds to pay for multiple domestic and international trips for her immediate family. She also allegedly provided false and/or misleading information on travel forms she submitted.
Zane allegedly took a total of 19 trips between June 2021 and December 2023 at the university's expense, to the of $58,064.
When she wasn't traveling with her family, Zane taught "intersectional courses that focus on how gender, race, sex, and sexuality are woven into systems of difference and stratification that shape our past and present."
She contributed to UConn's new Common Curriculum launched in Fall 2025, having served on the Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice subcommittee.
She also co-wrote an application for and won a $100k grant from the Mellon Foundation for expanding programming in feminist disability studies.
Zane was charged with larceny in the first degree and is free on a $10,000 bond. Court records show she is scheduled to enter a plea April 4.
