CDM founder L. Todd Wood spoke with a recent Connecticut high school graduate, Joe Gionfriddo, after his comments to the Newington Board of Education went viral on social media.
In the viral clip, Gionfriddo said, "As I entered into my last year of high school, I questioned if the school district really prepared me for the real world, and I wanted to take some observations throughout the year about this." Gionfriddo goes on to deliver a critical assessment of his own school district, citing failures in math, lowered expectations, an increase in bureaucracy, and more.
Wood talked to Gionfriddo about the issues contributing to the downfall of America's youth... starting with smart phones that leave kids "practically brain dead" and unable to problem solve.
Gionfriddo points out that part of the problem is the administrative bloat in schools where the number of administrators is growing while at the same time school enrollment is declining. He talks about how schools have effectively been "dumbed down" and the knock-on effects that causes, like young people are not prepared to enter the workforce.
The good news is that Gionfriddo says a lot of young people he knows are prepared to stand up for their rights. He points out that the democrat's message of "straight white men are always evil" is a fail, and has driven many young people away from the party. And he shares the crazy story of CSCU Chancellor Terrence Cheng, who managed to abuse the system and retain a high paying job.
The Connecticut GOP should be actively engaging young people like Gionfriddo if the party really wants to re-energize itself, and capitalize on this momentum.
