I spoke last night to another parent whose child was secretly socially transitioned in high school without her parents’ notification or consent. The Smith family of Litchfield County joins parents Elvira Syed and Marissa Silvestri in the growing list of Connecticut families whose children were secretly socially transitioned in school.

Social transition is a powerful psycho-social intervention, one of many tools a professional psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist or other trained professional might recommend for a child experiencing distress over their sexual development. It involves allowing a child to adopt mannerisms and even pretend to be the opposite sex including a change of pronouns, binding genitals, genital packers, clothes, appearance, voice control and more. It is meant to be done with caution and due consideration to all of the mental health, abuse, trauma, distress and other social factors a child is dealing with. Unfortunately, it is possible to actually increase a child’s dysphoria and introduce what are called, iatrogenic harms (inadvertent or anticipated harmful side effects actually introduced by the treatment plans). Iatrogenic harms can artificially concretize a child’s illusionary or imaginary behavior into something they can’t back away from, even if they want to. Add maturity blocking drugs that inhibit puberty and mental/social development, it is a fast track to transgender hormones and surgery. The Federal Trade Commission had an entire conference on the dangers of these and other “gender affirming” treatments and is seeking comments from victims.

Astonishingly, our school systems have been encouraged to initiate and facilitate social transitions of children without the knowledge or consent of parents by the Connecticut Department of Education. These policies interfere and drive a wedge in the parent/child relationship. They violate Constitutional due process protections and equal treatment under the law. They are a violation of a parent’s God given and Constitutional rights to bring up their children with their values. In opposition to our Attorney General, the Family Institute of Connecticut has filed and is filing numerous amici briefs in federal court against these and similar policies. We anticipate the Supreme Court to weigh in on these important topics next session.

In the meantime, it is important that we call out any unfair and horrendous policies and actions by our state government and leadership. The policy of secret social transitions, is just a small part of a larger and more traumatic story for the Smith family. Not only was the Smith’s child socially transitioned without their consent, their child was secretly and permanently taken away by the State during a temporary hospital stay. In the words of Mr. Smith, “My daughter was kidnapped by the State.” Despite DCF officially finding no abuse, she appears to have been removed because of their Christian faith and their refusal to affirm their daughter’s false gender identity. What is wrong with our State? Why is this outrageous atrocity allowed to happen?

Family Institute of Connecticut’s 2025 Stetson Awardee, Representative Anne Dauphinais, introduced a bill this year to stop the Connecticut Department of Children and Families from investigating parents or removing children because a parent doesn’t affirm a false gender identity. Connecticut needs this law and administrative or legal action to challenge the Department of Education’s “transgender guidance”. Join us on September 19, 2025 at our Annual Fundraising Gala to honor Representative Dauphinais and support FIC’s mission to protect the family in Connecticut.
