Connecticut’s Homeless Crisis: Who Is Really Being Helped?

Across Connecticut, homelessness continues to grow, and what I’ve been seeing on the ground is disturbing. Despite millions of dollars flowing into nonprofits every year, the crisis isn’t getting better — it’s getting worse. And while politicians debate the issue along party lines, people are slipping through the cracks.

The truth is, most of the people on the streets aren’t just “down on their luck.” They’re severely mentally ill, severely addicted, and many have been out here for years. Nonprofits cycle them through the same failed programs over and over again, while real solutions never come. It feels like the system is designed to keep the money flowing rather than to get people out of homelessness for good.

But what scares me most is a newer trend: older adults, ages 55 and up, losing their homes because rents have doubled or tripled. These are people who’ve lived in their apartments for 5, 10, even 20 years, only to be forced out when a new owner raises the rent beyond what their Social Security checks can cover.

I’ve seen seniors squeezed into one-bedroom apartments with two or three others just to survive. I’ve seen a 67-year-old woman, missing a leg, forced to live in a friend’s car after being pushed out of her home of 18 years. These are not isolated stories. They’re becoming the new normal.

And yet, nonprofits too often overlook this group. Instead of addressing housing for seniors and long-term residents, they focus on programs that bring in the most funding — which often means centering on criminals and addicts. Crime victims and vulnerable seniors end up re-victimized by a system that is supposed to protect them.

That’s why I’ve started making videos. Because what’s happening here isn’t being told. Behind the statistics are real people — neighbors, parents, grandparents — being left behind in a broken system. If we don’t start telling the truth about what’s happening, nothing will change.
