America was recently entertained by the two CEOs of federally-funded media conglomerates – PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and NPR (National Public Radio) – profusely apologizing for previous liberal bias and vowing to change their ways if the taxpayers will just write the check. Republicans should not take the bait.
First some background. PBS is a television station watched by millions. News is a small part of its appeal as it serves as a platform for great documentaries such as Nova, Nature and entertaining historical mini-series such as Wolf Hall and Marie Antoniette. But its most famous product is the childhood hit, Sesame Street.
PBS also has news programming. Years ago, this was highlighted by the MacNeil/Lehrer Report that ended in 1983. While slightly left of center, even conservatives enjoyed the mostly objective reporting of these two gentlemen.
But in the subsequent decades, PBS News devolved into a liberal propaganda machine serving as cheerleaders for Obama and Biden while attacking Donald Trump. Italy’s Prime Minster, Giorgia Meloni, is characterized as “far right” while those who question the wisdom of gender-changing surgeries are portrayed as troglodytes.
And NPR is even worse. When the Russian hoax was being perpetrated against President Trump, his antagonist Representative Adam Schiff was interviewed dozens of times. When Robert Mueller finally admitted there was no evidence of Trump Russian collusion, NPR did a Gilda Radner and said, “Never mind.”
NPR refused to cover the Hunter Biden laptop scandal and portrayed those who opined that the COVID virus may have come from a Chinese lab as conspiracy theorists. Now most analysts concede that the COVID virus cam from a Wuhan laboratory.
This bias was exposed in a mea culpa by liberal NPR journalist of twenty-five years, Uri Berliner, who described himself as “Sarah Lawrence–educated, [who] was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother.” He pointed out that of the employees working for NPR in the Washington D.C. area, 87 were Democrats and zero were Republicans. For his perceived perfidy, Berliner was laid off.
Republicans have been gunning for PBS and NPR for years as they receive half a billion dollars in taxpayer subsidies annually. This recently culminated in the CEOs of both testifying to Congress.
This made for great entertainment.
Perhaps the best snippet was when NPR CEO Katherine Maher tried to walk back her statement in which she called President Trump “a deranged racist sociopath.”
But anyone watching the testimony of these CEOs would be impressed how they were willing to grovel in front of the conservative Republicans who grilled them. This made little sense. Liberals are masters of radiating social superiority.
Curious. I looked up their salaries. Ms. Maher makes $749,000 a year while the CEO of PBS, Ms. Paula Kerger pulls in over $1,000,000. I’d watch Tom Brady’s home movies for this kind of money!
Now everything makes sense. All the Democrats screaming at Elon Musk while promoting left-wing biased news outlets have one concern - being overpaid courtesy of the American taxpayer. These two women would have donned MAGA hats if they thought it would help them keep these salaries.
If the government wants to subsidized PBS and NPR, fine. But then they should also subsidize Fox New and Newsmax TV. Otherwise, let these liberal outlets find other sources for their revenue if they wish to fund huge salaries for their CEOs.
But even if Congress defunds PBS and NPR, Ms. Kerger and Ms. Maher may have the last laugh. Some liberal judge could order that they must be funded. Liberals are very good at gaming the system.
