Salisbury, CT, resident Amy Lake apparently got triggered after seeing new packaging on bags of shrimp at local grocery store chain LaBonne’s Markets.

The new label reflected where the shrimp were harvested -- in the Gulf of America.

Lake was apparently shocked by the perceived "nationalist overreach" that was "showing up" in a "cherished community business" and told the Lakeville Journal that she was “kind of shaken by what [she] saw as jingoism in the aisle.”

Lake said she complained to Jill Drew, the Chair of the Sharon Democrat Town Committee and an Alternate Member on the Town of Sharon's Planning & Zoning Board, who then wrote about the name change in her twice-per-week email called "Today's Action."

Drew's email prompted ~20 shoppers to lodge complaints with LaBonne's Salisbury store.

The president of the grocery chain, Rob LaBonne III, responded to the "intense" feedback from the angry shoppers, and wanted to make sure they knew that the store wasn't "making a political statement with bagged shrimp."

“As a grocery store, we have to be everything to everybody,” LaBonne said. “We have people from all walks of life and political backgrounds who work for us, shop with us.”

LaBonne indicated that a customer had previously complained about the Gulf of America Shrimp label at the store's Prospect, CT, location about a month ago.

That's when LaBonne first contacted the distributor to request a label change.

The distributor said it needed to sell the remaining stock with the “Gulf of America” label.

But when the "flood" of complaints came into the Salisbury location after Drew's email, LaBonne requested that the distributor print new labels to cover the triggering phrase "Gulf of America" and instead say "Product of the USA."

Lake was grateful that the store responded so quickly to her mental break over some words.

"It’s an act of courage to speak out as a public citizen and say this doesn’t fly here,” said Lake, who now has a safe space to shop.
