There are less than three weeks remaining in the 2024 Connecticut legislative session. Life, religious liberty, and parental rights all hang in the balance. If the bills FIC Action is fighting should fail to pass by May 8th, we win—and they are dead for the year.
If they do pass, well, we lose—and it will be a dark day for Connecticut.
We are working day and night behind the scenes to stop that from happening. But we need your help.
Here is a rundown of our top priorities:
SJ 4, the Resolution Proposing a State Constitutional Amendment Creating a “Right” for Abortion Up to Birth and for Gender Transitions, Even for Minors Without Parental Knowledge or Consent
SJ 4 has passed out of the GAE Committee. It is now on the Senate calendar. That means it could be voted on at any time!
You have likely heard of the abortion amendment fights that have engulfed other states since the fall of Roe v. Wade. Connecticut's SJ 4 goes beyond any of them. It is the most radical abortion amendment proposal of them all.
If SJ 4 becomes a part of the Connecticut State Constitution, it may allow late-term abortions right up to birth. Any chance of passing even an incremental law protecting the unborn, such as parental notification, will likely be gone. And it may leave gender-confused minors to their own devices, without parental involvement, should they choose to undergo permanent mutilating surgery.
HB 5424, Pro-Abortion Pro-Transgender Attack on Religious Liberty
HB 5424 is aimed squarely at Connecticut's Catholic hospitals. The Public Health Committee admitted it during the public hearing.
HB 5424 would force Catholic hospitals to allow its employees to make referrals for abortion and gender transitions, in violation of the health directives under which Catholic hospitals operate.
Connecticut's pro-abortionists themselves describe HB 5424 as "a crucial next step." A crucial next step toward what? Forcing Catholic healthcare to actually provide the abortions and gender transitions someday, that's what!
Don't let them get to that final "step." Let's stop them now, before they destroy the right of Catholic healthcare to control its own mission.
HB 5417, Protect Porn in School Libraries Bill
HB 5417 would remove power from elected Boards of Education and give it to un-elected librarians to decide whether books depicting graphic sex acts will be available to young children in grammar school libraries.
HB 5417 has passed the Education Committee and is on the House list. It could be voted on at any time. We need your help to stop it.
But Wait. There's More.
HB 5101, a Scholarship for Low Income Kids Bill, has died in committee. This is unfortunate. The concept might reappear in the budget process before the end of the session.
SB 214, the Doctor Protection Bill, has died in committee. SB 214 was the occasion for which FIC Action and our allies forced the public hearing that was never held on this law, which creates hurdles for gender-confused minors who wish to sue doctors who mutilated them.
It was also, in a sense, the public hearing we were denied on our Let Kids Be Kids Bill. But even without a straight-up public hearing on Let Kids Be Kids, the issues raised by FIC Action and our allies have continued to reverberate all throughout the 2024 Connecticut legislative session.
Consider poor Sen. Cecil Maher, for instance. The liberal legislator was so beside herself over the possibility that the secret transing of kids from one sex to the other by taxpayer-funded schools might be ended by a law requiring parental notification that she penned a whole op-ed against it.
Sen. Maher was especially offended by the fact that, when State Treasurer Erick Russell attacked the legislators proposing the Let Kids Be Kids Bill in an incoherent column for the Hartford Courant, those legislators "immediately" defended themselves in a letter-to-the-editor. Oh, the horror!
We were particularly struck by Sen. Maher's insensitivity in claiming that our side are the hurtful ones... for daring to speak forbidden thoughts.
This is similar to the robotic response of Sen. Mae Flexer during the SJ 4 public hearing, who sat stone-faced during the heartbreaking testimony of people who were harmed by the transgender agenda only to claim afterward that they were the ones who committed harm by speaking about what they suffered. Pro-trans legislators completely ignore the pain of others, even those who identify as LGBT, if it does not fit their preconceived agenda.
It is precisely because of this sort of blindness by the far left at our state Capitol that the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus of the Democratic Party seems to have had enough. FIC told you last week about the fight that erupted over "expectant mothers" vs. "pregnant fathers." The reaction since then by our state's liberal media has made it only more cringe-inducing.
This column by Hearst CT Media's Dan Haar, for instance, has to be seen to be believed.
Unlike Rep. Jillian Gilchrest, Haar is too smart to lecture a black person on how she should express herself about discrimination. No, instead, Haar puts it right out there. He says Rep. Porter insisting on "expectant mother" is a "danger" because it "could help the far-right, especially former President Donald Trump."
We are struck by Dan Haar's naked political calculation. The only thing that truly matters to white progressives, in elected office and in our media, is politics. The actual concerns of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus over gender or the actual pain of LGBT-identifying individuals who oppose transgenderism in the schools? They could not care less.
