The Connecticut Senate Democrats are celebrating a schism over the role of theology and LGBTQ people in the United Methodist church that has caused one-fifth of churches in the US to leave United Methodist Inc.
A total of 6,182 congregations have left United Methodist since 2019, when the church granted a four-year window in which congregations could depart over LGBTQ issues. About two-thirds of the congregations (4,172) left the church in 2023 alone.
Congregations that left are now becoming members at other churches, setting up their own independent congregations or joining the Global Methodist Church.
United Methodist Church Law forbids marriage or ordination of "practicing homosexuals” but many US churches openly defied that ban, ultimately leading to the split.
Interesting that the CT Senate Dems are celebrating division based on differing religious beliefs.
