US Senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, took to Twitter to announce a new bill he's introducing: The National Strategy for Social Connection Act.
The bill would create a new federal office within the Executive Office of the President in order to "combat loneliness and strengthen communities". That would mean that in addition to nutrition, sleep, and physical activity, the government would now be recommending guidelines on how to better socially engage with members of your own community.
The bill follows a May 3, 2023, announcement by Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy.
“Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an under-appreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health. Our relationships are a source of healing and well-being hiding in plain sight – one that can help us live healthier, more fulfilled, and more productive lives,” said US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. “Given the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders. Together, we can build a country that’s healthier, more resilient, less lonely, and more connected.”
The epidemic of loneliness and isolation in the US has undoubtedly been exacerbated by, or perhaps even directly caused by, bad policies that the US government implemented in the name of covid, including unscientific guidelines on masks and social distancing, as well as non-stop fear mongering over a virus that had a 99% survival rate.
How thoughtful of the government to offer to solve a problem it helped to create.
