“Washington Post’s fact-checker Glenn Kessler has awarded President Joe Biden “Four Pinocchios” for his false claim that his son, Hunter Biden, never made money from China. Kessler highlighted that Hunter Biden’s court testimony last week directly contradicted his father’s previous statements during the 2020 presidential debates,” according to The New York Post.
Kessler, it should be pointed out, is associated with the Washington Post, not the New York Post, which, some suspect, is too friendly to former President Donald Trump, the destructor elect of the nation’s “democracy,” according to Trump’s most furious media critics.
Kessler “detailed Hunter Biden’s involvement with the BHR investment advisory firm, which included Chinese entities, shortly after the 2013 trip. Additionally, in 2017, after Joe Biden left public office, Hunter entered into a deal with CEFC China Energy, a Chinese energy conglomerate. Documents found on a laptop connected to Hunter Biden revealed transactions totaling $4.8 million from CEFC and its executives to entities controlled by Hunter and Joe Biden’s brother, James,” the New York Post gleefully reported.
The members of Connecticut’s U.S. Congressional Delegation in Washington D.C., all Democrats, have yet to weigh in on the Washington Post’s Pinocchios.
Are they justified or not?
Few voters in Connecticut will have in hand the answer to this question, largely because Connecticut’s media has yet to put the question to U.S. Senators Chris Murphy and Dick Blumenthal, or U.S. Representatives Rosa DeLauro and John Larson, both occupants of impregnable congressional sinecures, or U.S. Representatives Jim Himes, Joe Courtney and Jahana Hayes.
The Connecticut members of the state’s U.S. Congressional Delegation have been more than happy to weigh in on the efforts of Trump to destroy the electoral college reckoning of (2020), thereby subverting “the democracy.” But the prospect of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, shuttling bribe money received from foreign entities unfriendly to the United States into the pockets of the Biden “get-rich-quick” clan seems to have left Connecticut Democrats tongue-tied.
Incidentally, one of the questions never asked of the all Democrat members of Connecticut U.S. Congressional Delegation is this: Is it a greater assault on “the democracy” to interrupt the counting of electoral presidential votes than it would be to abolish the electoral college altogether?
The Electoral College, it will be recalled, was instituted by the founders to democratize federal voting in such a way that more populous states would not have a permanent advantage in a popular vote count over smaller states. National Democrats have recently favored the abolition of the Electoral College, thereby leaving presidential elections at the mercy of a handful of large cities long commandeered by Democrats.
Republican congressmen in Connecticut favor retaining the Electoral College in its present form -- for the same reason they would be loathed to reform the national legislature, long divided into two chambers, Senate and House, a compromise proposed by Connecticut’s own Roger Sherman to satisfy the doctrine of proportional representation.
A unicameral national legislature of senators popularly elected, Sherman felt, would be destructive of “the democracy,” because such a body would no longer represent the interest of states rather than the interests of a powerful and unheeding central government.
A recent severe drop off in poll numbers should give pause for reflection to Connecticut’s Congressional Delegation.
Over the weekend pollsters reported a drop in groups normally supportive of national and state Democrats. Non-white working classes in the United States have shifted affections towards Republicans, according to Axios: “One of the main reasons President Biden is struggling in polls against former President Trump is his glaring underperformance with a constituency that has long been overwhelmingly Democratic: non-white voters without a college degree.”
Surprisingly, “The slippage is occurring even as Trump, the GOP's standard bearer, is facing an unprecedented trifecta of indictments in the run-up to the 2024 election.”
What accounts for the turnstile drift toward Republicans?
American Enterprise Institute Ruy Teixeira, points to three issues “dragging down Democratic support with non-white working-class voters, based on recent polling.”
1) The progressive worldview that “racism is systemic in our society, rather than coming from individuals with racist views, is broadly unpopular among the non-white working class. He adds that debates over transgender rights also divide Democrats along class and educational lines.”
2) “Working-class non-white voters feel the impact of crime in their communities most directly and favor more punitive policies than their left-wing counterparts.”
3) “Non-white working-class voters are not satisfied with the state of the economy, despite some clear signs of improvement. Opposition to Biden's environmental agenda — the view that Democrats are pushing the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy too quickly — is a consistent theme with working-class voters of all backgrounds.”
Of course, whether Republicans in Connecticut are able and willing to exploit such fissures in the Democrat phalanx during the upcoming 2024 campaign is yet an open question. Republicans may yet see the light seen by Democrat voters slipping silently into the Republican Party and adjust their campaigns accordingly.
