President Trump's mission to cut government waste and eliminate excessive spending is not sitting well with a group of scientists who argue the cost-cutting efforts are tantamount to a "war on science."

Stand Up For Science ("SUFS") is a grassroots organization led by five early-career scientists, including Colette Delawalla (Emory University), Emma Courtney (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), JP Flores (UNC Chapel Hill), Sam Goldstein (University of Florida), and Leslie Berntsen (stemEDify), that has quickly grown to include around 100 volunteers.

SUFS is organizing and fundraising for a day of protests in Washington, D.C., and state capitals nationwide, including Hartford, on March 7th.

The group says, "science is for everyone."

"Science gives us clean water by helping us understand pollution and protect our rivers. It gives us lifesaving medicine, from vaccines to cancer treatments. It gives us climate solutions, showing us how to fight wildfires, hurricanes, and rising seas," writes SUFS.

SUFS is mobilizing in part because "attacks on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access are attacks on science."

They also argue that "lives are being lost" after USAID funding got doged. Plus, they think that the alleged "relentless assault on vaccines" by the Trump Administration will "kill" people.

SUFS has three policy priorities, including:

  • Securing and expanding science funding: They’re not coming to the bargaining table asking for just what they had before... they want more funding than they had before the cost-cutting began.
  • Ending censorship and political interference in science: They want to restore all scientific data, reports, and resources on federal websites to pre-January 31st, 2025 status.
  • Defending DEI programs: They want all DEI programs within federal agencies to be restored to pre Jan 2025 to ensure "continued progress toward equity."

The March 7th protest is being cross-promoted by members of Indivisible, a Soros-funded progressive activist group that's also pushing members to protest against Trump, Musk and the D.O.G.E. cost-cutting efforts.

The Connecticut General Assembly even added the SUFS "peaceful protest" to the CGA calendar.
