Bridgeport Public Schools ("BPS") Interim Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery announced that the district’s "immigration safety guidelines" are now in full effect.
“We will not tolerate any threats to the safety or dignity of our students,” Avery said at Monday night's Board of Education meeting.
“Every student in Bridgeport, regardless of their immigration status, has the right to feel secure and supported in our schools," he continued. "Our schools will remain a safe space where all students can learn, grow, and succeed without fear or discrimination.”
The district also published a document that reiterated Avery's sentiments about protecting all immigrants, including illegal aliens, the correct legal term for people who illegally entered this country.
The document promises that "no ICE agents or government officials can enter school buildings, buses, or attend school events without prior authorization" and also reminds parents that BPS does not track immigration status of students.
The problem with that stance, however, is that on January 20, 2025, Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a directive to empower ICE officers to take action inside schools.
“This action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws," said a DHS Spokesperson. "Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense."
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and Department of Justice also announced intentions to investigate and potentially charge state and local officials who decide not to comply with ICE, according to CBS News which received a copy of a memo written by Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove.
"The Supremacy Clause and other authorities require state and local actors to comply with the Executive Branch's immigration enforcement initiatives. Federal law prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing, and otherwise failing to comply with lawful immigration-related commands and requests," Bove wrote. "The U.S. Attorney's Offices and litigating components of the Department of Justice shall investigate incidents involving any such misconduct for potential prosecution."
