The 4Cs SEIU 1973 union recently passed a resolution calling for an "arms embargo on Israel and divestment of Israeli genocide, apartheid, and illegal occupation of Palestine."
The union represents full-time and part-time faculty and professional staff at Connecticut State Community College, the University of Hartford and Charter Oak State College.
The resolution passed on October 9th with 24 votes yes, 8 votes no, and 10 abstentions.
Seth Freeman, a Professor of Computer Information Systems at Connecticut State Community College and President of 4Cs SEIU 1973 wrote about the passage of the resolution in an Op Ed he submitted to People's World, a newspaper described as a "megaphone for the Communist Party."
Freeman explained that 4Cs SEIU 1973 passed the resolution "as part of our commitment to fighting for the working class and fighting for racial and economic justice. We understand that the fight for public education—and public higher education—is a racial and economic justice fight. We understand that the fight for public education—and public higher education—is a racial and economic justice fight."
He provided an example of the fight against oppression—the Gaza tent encampment movement that took hold on college campuses last year to demand a ceasefire—and whined about Trump using ICE "to kidnap graduate students protesting for Palestinian rights."
The resolution accuses Israel of killing "at least 64,000 Palestinians in Gaza, half of them women and children" and "likely" killing another 100,000 with "blockades on food aid" and "systematic destruction of Gazan medical facilities and water and sanitation infrastructure."
It cites the International Court of Justice (ICJ) finding that it was “plausible” that Israel was committing genocide through its "prolonged occupation" in Gaza and its "system of racial segregation and apartheid."
The resolution accuses President Trump of openly calling for "ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza" and the US government of "actively funding and arming the Israeli genocide and providing diplomatic cover to Israel through blocking United Nations ceasefire resolutions."
It further accuses the Trump administration of launching "an unprecedented attack on international students" by "threatening to revoke or deny visa applications for students who criticize Israel and express support for Palestine."
"The Trump administration has launched an unprecedented attack on free speech and academic freedom by freezing or cancelling federal funds from higher education institutions that are not censoring speech on Israel," the resolution says. "This includes the settlement agreements with Harvard, Columbia and Brown universities and Trump’s current attempt to extort UCLA for one billion dollars."
As a result, the 4Cs SEIU 1973 called for "an immediate arms embargo on and a cessation of any type of aid and diplomatic assistance to Israel and any other country that commits war crimes or otherwise violates international law."
It further resolved that 4Cs SEIU 1973 will "immediately divest any financial investments from all entities complicit in the current and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and occupation of Palestine... and make no future investment in entities complicit in this crisis."
4Cs SEIU 1973 is also demanding that the State of Connecticut "divest" and "make no future investment in entities complicit in this crisis including any investments in the Israeli military in the form of Israel Bonds."
