President Donald Trump revealed on Monday that Sikorsky Aircraft, a Connecticut-based subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, will fully fund the construction of a new granite helipad on the White House South Lawn.
The estimated $5–6 million project will feature the White House seal and is designed to accommodate the newer, more powerful Marine One helicopters. According to Trump, the stronger aircraft — replacements for decades-old models — damaged the historic lawn by literally blowing the grass away during landing and takeoff.
In his characteristically engaging style, Trump recounted the situation with a touch of humor and charm, explaining how Sikorsky stepped up to cover the costs after the issue became clear. “Their new helicopter was too strong,” he noted, describing how the powerful downdraft had torn up the grass.
