The first words out of Senator Chris Murphy's mouth on The Bulwark Podcast with Tim Miller sounded a whole lot like "Trump is winning."
To be more specific, Murphy said:
"We are living in a democratic dystopia. It's worse than I think I could have imagined, and I was probably one of the most alarmist voices even before he got sworn in. I think what probably makes this moment so urgent for me is that none of this is accidental, and this is clearly a plan to try to undermine our democracy so seriously that we don't have a free and fair election in 2026."
Murphy goes on to allege that Trump is following a playbook from "Hungary, from Serbia, from Turkey whereby you just slowly, methodically crush dissent, crush the avenues of support that flow to your political opposition such that when you have elections, people feel like they have a choice, but it's a fake choice and really there's no way for the opposition to gather enough oxygen in order to win."
Murphy continues to explain that, "it's a really potent strategy because there is no coup, there is no moment where the parliament building burns down, there's not day where democracy exists and then the following day, it doesn't. You just stop being able to win elections."
This is why, Murphy argues, people need to be ready to "engage in some pretty exceptional, maybe ahistoric tactics in order to wake up parts of the country that are still sleeping..." leading one to wonder exactly what kind of "ahistoric tactics" he means.
Miller then presses Murphy on his dystopian prediction that the country won't have "a free and fair election in 2026" -- it's not the first time Murphy has made this baseless claim.
"If we exist in a space where the major sources of financial support for Democrats decide to sit on the sidelines because President Trump is micro-managing the economy and he is making people with money and resources pay a price if they step into the political arena," says a somber Murphy. "If there are more Stephen Colberts, some of the most significant voices that explain the danger of Donald Trump to the public are silenced; if violence continues to creep into our politics so that a lot of our activists decide by next fall, next summer to just stay home because it's just a little bit too rough out there; if Act Blue disappears next summer when it's too late for us to stand up another way to funnel donations into democratic candidates; if redistricting gets pulled off in a way where we just have a narrower path to a majority... we could be in a world where Donald Trump's approval ratings are 39%, and we don't win the House and we don't win the Senate."
That's why he says the "general public" is looking to the "most significant and vocal and visible democratic leaders," himself included, to get out there and "show some fight."
Miller asked Murphy if he felt like people were being intimidated into not donating to the democrat party out of fear of retribution.
"Oh I absolutely think that's happening," said Murphy who then clarified his earlier comments, saying there were not any "active threats of retribution" against any democrat donors, but it was his belief that donors were planning to "sit out" this next election cycle.
It probably has nothing to do with democrats advocating for radical positions or openly embracing communists like Zohran Mamdani, nor does it have anything to do with the rapidly unfolding Obama Administration Russiagate scandal.
Nonetheless, Murphy is concerned that democrats are being complacent.
He's also concerned about a, "world in which the regime operates outside of the box and the opposition stays inside of the box," because democrats are morally superior and abide by certain "norms" to which republicans allegedly do not.
And he's really bent out of shape over the passage of the rescissions package, and used that as an example of republicans breaking norms.
That was the gist of the "free" portion of the interview, and yet another masterful lesson in Murphlighting.
Meanwhile, speaking of "free and fair elections"...
and a coup...

Dems don't get it, have no clue why they lost and Trump won, not in CT of course, which is severely lost due to mainstream media lies and censorship of all news not fitting the narrative. So sad to watch otherwise smart Nutmeggers who are brainwashed!
Murphy is correct about everything...but it isn't Trump who's silencing dissent...it's the Democrats.
Exactly- CT is the center of Communism(not Democracy…or, a Constitutional Republic). If Tong, Lamont, and our Congressmen have their way, China will be running our next govt.👿. How much did Ned make in masks alone(from China), during Covid?🤮
