Connecticut residents recently received electric bills with a quaint People’s Republic of Connecticut addition: the Public Benefits Charge.
Meanwhile, the CEOs of Connecticut’s electric companies have been slumming it, with Joe Nolan of Eversource pulling in a paltry $18,800,000 a year while the piker Franklyn Reynolds had to recently apply for Medicaid because of his lowly $1,025,000 salary. No wonder the sales of Louis XIII Cognac are plummeting.
First some background. Electric bills are based on the amount of power a residence uses for items such as refrigerators, air conditioners, computers etc. This unit of power is called a watt (amperes x volts for you physics fans). A laptop will typically use 30 watts per hour.
If you look at your electric bill, you will see the term kilowatt, which simply is 1,000 watts. Furthermore, you will see the term kilowatts per hour (kilowatt/hour), which means the amount of power your residence consumes per unit of time.
In Connecticut, the typical electric bill will have a charge of 29 cents per kilowatt/hour and these bills are paid monthly. The average monthly bill in Connecticut is about $400, meaning the average residence uses almost 1,400 kilowatt/hours per month.
Nationally, the average price for a kilowatt/hour is 16 cents.
So why is Connecticut’s so high? If you listen to the political class and the corporate media, you will hear incomprehensible gibberish such a such as the cost of maintaining the electric grid, the high cost of fossil fuels, the need for bureaucratic reform in Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA) by separating it from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), reallocating unobligated end-of-year American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, etc.
Of course this is all nonsense. The reason electricity costs are high is because the Democrats won the election. And one of the most vocal Democratic constituencies is the Climate Change lobby. These people believe manmade behavior via the use of fossil fuels is causing climate change resulting in hotter temperatures and more intense storms.
Never mind that the hottest year on record is 1933 (if you don’t believe me, read The Grapes of Wrath). Never mind that last year, there were about 20,000 deaths worldwide from natural disasters whereas 100 years ago, there were 200,000 deaths – even though the population of the planet was four times less than today. Never mind that the planet was much hotter 1,200 years ago and that Greenland (which now has 83% of its surface covered with glaciers) was all green – thus the name.
Never mind that there is no scientific explanation why increasing the CO2 concentration from 200 parts per million (ppm) 100 years ago (yes, CO2 concentration is so low it is measured in parts per million) to 430 parts per million causes the Earth’s temperature to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius. Never mind that this prediction is based on computer models that can’t predict the weather one week from now. And never mind there has never been an experiment where the CO2 concentration is increased from 200 ppm to 430 ppm in a geodesic dome to test this hypothesis.
Yet the powerful Climate Change lobby pushed our Democratic legislators to require that a minimum amount of power must come from renewables. The problem is that the wind does not always blow, and the sun does not always shine. Thus, when power is needed quickly, Connecticut imports power from fossil fuel producers. And buying this power on short demand is expensive. It’s like trying to find a hotel room in Pittsburgh the day before the Steelers’ game (unless they are playing the Jets). You may find one. But you are going to pay to the nose.
Thus, electricity rates skyrocketed, and the poor could not afford to pay them. Which means Mr. Nolan and Mr. Reynolds have to buy Boone’s Farm for their wine cellar. And we can’t have that.
Thus, the Democrats added “The Public Benefits Charge” to your electric bill to subsidize those who cannot afford to pay these high rates.
The Republicans want to call a Special Session to confront this issue, but all they are suggesting is eliminating the Public Benefits Charge and paying the energy bills with tax revenues. But it is unlikely they have the votes for this, let alone eliminating the renewable power mandates – which is what really needs to be done.
So this is just another adventure in the People’s Republic of Connecticut, where the poor are hopelessly dependent, the affluent hold their nose and pay the bill and the middle class exits to the rationally governed Republican southern states.
