The City of New Haven has joined together with left coast blue jurisdictions to sue the Trump Administration in order to "protect" its "welcoming city" status for illegals.

New Haven joins San Francisco; Santa Clara County; Portland, Oregon; and King County, Washington, in the lawsuit, which was filed by San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu on February 7th.

The lawsuit argues that Trump's Executive Orders are "illegally harming" sanctuary jurisdictions that "do not bend to the will" of the Trump Administration.

It seems the sanctuary cities are concerned about losing funding, but at the same time have made it clear that sanctuary cities have absolutely no interest whatsoever in using local resources to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) efforts.

The lawsuit further argues that Trump's Executive Orders amount to a "flagrant disregard of the law" and "fly in the face of foundational constitutional principles."

"And they force local governments that have made deliberate decisions about how to make their communities safer and where to spend their own resources into an impossible choice—to relinquish their autonomy and independence and abandon their valid laws and policies, or face the sudden and devastating loss of federal funding and civil and criminal enforcement actions," the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit argues that Trump’s Executive Order and the DOJ’s related memo violate the Tenth Amendment, Separation of Powers, the Spending Clause, and the Due Process Clause. The lawsuit further argues that DOJ’s memo is "unlawful because it is arbitrary and capricious, contrary to constitutional rights, and issued in excess of its statutory jurisdiction."

Mayor Elicker signed New Haven's “Welcoming City” executive order in 2020.

The Welcoming City Order promises New Haven will become a sanctuary for illegals by giving illegals a government ID, preventing police from ascertaining immigration status, restricting officials from cooperating with ICE, and more.

Being a sanctuary is so important to Elicker that he even re-educated officials on the Welcoming City order just to make sure everyone, including illegals, could still access health care, education and other services paid for by legitimate, tax-paying residents of the state.

Elicker also launched a Resource Guide to make sure illegals "know their rights" in case of ICE raids.

The guide included links to organizations impacted by Trump's funding freeze, including Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS).

Elicker believes that Executive Order 14159 will "divert resources away from fighting crime, towards hunting down good community members that are productive and happen to be immigrants.”

“By cutting public safety funding vital to our city’s ability to fight crime, it will make our city less safe," said Elicker. "Let’s be clear: Through the executive order, President Trump is defunding the police.”

It's hard to comprehend how cooperating with ICE to remove criminal illegals will make sanctuary cities "less safe" but it's hardly the first time sanctuary city officials have gaslit their constituents.
