Given the negative press regarding CRG’s position on the EMS project, we feel compelled to respond to the attacks and set the record straight.
Regardless of the use, the building is a Town of Easton asset which needs to be renovated and protected.
However, almost two years ago, it became clear that while significant focus was being placed on the construction of a new EMS building, issues related to dangerous gaps in service were being largely ignored.
For the past year CRG, Fire Department and citizens who were the recipients of the lack of service were very vocal about raising awareness and resolving these health and safety dangers to our community.
Calls like the double fatality on Black Rock Turnpike when it took Easton EMS 46 minutes to get our ambulance on scene and a 100-year flood that happened on a weekend where we regularly lacked shift coverage exposed the lack of service dangers that were being denied and ignored!
The CRG position has always been
Safety First!
SERVICE over Brick and Mortar!
It is our position that Easton needs a long-term EMS plan that delivers 24/7, immediate, experienced service that is sustainable, and the plan will dictate the buildings needs.
It is our belief that a wish list fancy building will not resolve our lack of service that plagued this community for years!
It is our concern that taxpayer will not only pay for the fancy building, but also have to pay for the long-term plan - full paid service that will prove to be expensive and the fancy building with all the bells and whistles was un-necessary!
Doing things out of sequence has wasted tax payer dollars!
Relocation involves rehab of a residential building the town does not own for a public use to the tune of $130,000 - $150,000. This require plans, approvals, and inspections by P&Z, Health and the Building Department that will undoubtedly delay the start of the construction.
Relocation at Fire house is FREE, immediate, and set up for emergency services, an ambulance parked th an inside garage, and centrally located!
Use the $130,000 - $150,000 to increase paid service while we are in flux and EMS is trying to build its service. This will allow the proper training time, and use of the training, to gain the experience needed.
Rushing into the SHU EMT Student program without the proper training time is a disservice to both the town and to them. The program has failed the previous two times we tried it.
Rushing without a plan and rushing the plan is too expensive and wasting tax payer dollars and a disservice to the community!!!
Citizens for Responsible Government (CRG) was founded by Easton resident Bud Jennings over 30 years ago and is the oldest PAC in CT. For many years the group acted as a tax watchdog. In more recent years the mission has broadened, and CRG works to protect and sustain the traditional processes of Easton governance, the Town Meeting, by raising awareness regarding important town issues.
