Another day, another coalition letter from democrat state attorneys general.
This time CT AG William Tong joined a coalition of 20 AGs in sending a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, urging the Senate to require Kash Patel, President Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, to return for further questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
It seems the AGs are a bit tweaked after agents involved in investigating J6 were fired.
“The Trump Administration’s threats to federal law enforcement are nothing short of a welcome mat for cybercriminals, terrorists, human traffickers and drug cartels. Anything short of a complete and utter rebuke by Kash Patel of this dangerous purge must be immediately disqualifying,” said Attorney General Tong.
The AGs think that the J6 firings were "politically motivated."
"Shortly after his confirmation hearing, we learned from news reports that more than a dozen high-ranking FBI officials were fired and that the FBI is developing a list of all agents and staff who worked investigations and prosecutions related to the January 6th Capitol riots," wrote the AGs. "It is critical for Mr. Patel to answer questions about this unprecedented attack on the FBI before Senators vote on his confirmation."
The letter raises additional concerns over reports that "the Administration plans to fire at least six high-ranking career FBI officials if they do not retire" and that "acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove directed FBI staff to compile a list of all staff who were ‘assigned at any time to investigations and/or prosecutions’ relating to the January 6th riots."
The AGs were especially triggered by Patel's public statement suggesting he would shut down the FBI's headquarters "on Day 1 and reopen it the next day as a museum to the deep state." So they want to know exactly what Mr. Patel plans to do with the list of FBI agents and staff that is currently being compiled before any confirmation vote.
"Purging over 6,000 FBI agents and staff will have disastrous effects on public safety across the country and will make our communities more dangerous. Indeed, FBI employees and staff protect America from the public safety harms that President Trump listed in his executive orders—fentanyl, the Mexican Cartels, foreign terrorist organizations, and harms to American’s pocketbooks."
"In just two weeks, the President has fired United States Attorneys, pardoned rioters who killed and injured Capitol Police Officers, and attempted to cut off funding for law enforcement across the country," wrote the panicked AGs.
The AGs also complained that the Trump Admin fired over a dozen prosecutors that had been assigned to prosecute cases involving the January 6th fed-surrection.
The letter continues, "Further, Congress must question Administration officials on the scope of pardoning Capitol rioters, and its attempts to dismiss pending cases against January 6th rioters. At least one judge has already found that the dismissals will harm public safety and are unjustified."
The AGs further called Trumps J6 pardons "reckless", leaving many to wonder where this coalition was during the Biden Administration's flurry of pardons, which included granting clemency to a man convicted in the brutal murders of an 8-year-old child and his mom in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to prevent the boy from testifying in another murder case.
The letter closes with the AG coalition accusing Trump of making the country "less safe" and demanding that Grassley make Patel answer questions about any pending "FBI purge."
Joining Connecticut in sending the letter are the AGs from Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaiʻi, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington.
