Connecticut Congressman John Larson released a statement yesterday regarding the medical incident he experienced on the House floor on Monday when his speech was momentarily paused.
“Following the incident, I saw the House Attending Physician, Dr. Monahan, who referred me for further evaluation," explained the 76-year-old Democrat who is currently serving his 13th term. "After a round of tests, it was determined that the cause of the brief pause in my speech was a complex partial seizure."
“Fifteen years ago, I had a heart valve replacement due to a variation in the shape of my aortic valve that I was born with. Sometimes, people with this condition can later develop symptoms such as the momentary change in speech or movement," Larson explained about the Monday incident.
“The doctors have prescribed medication that, according to them, will greatly reduce the chance of this happening again," said Larson who plans on resuming an active schedule, including his duties as a Member of Congress.
The incident has sparked a discussion about age and term limits.
The average age of Connecticut's seven member delegation to Washington is 66.6 years old, compared to an average of 59.4 for all members of the House and Senate.
