Matt Corey, who just ran against incumbent Chris Murphy for U.S. Senate, issued a statement after seeing last week's telephone interview between CT GOP Chairman Ben Proto and Yankee Tea News ("YTN").
"Consistency and transparency are essential in leadership, especially when guiding political campaigns. During our campaign, the Connecticut GOP Chair advised us that embracing President Trump or even mentioning his name would hurt candidates in the state. He justified this by citing past races, like the 2022 Senate race, where President Trump’s endorsement was said to have negatively impacted Republican campaigns in Connecticut," said Corey.
"Now, after the election is over, it’s surprising to hear the same Chairman openly embracing President Trump’s legacy," quips Corey. "This sudden shift in tone raises questions about the consistency of our party’s messaging and the guidance given to candidates during critical moments."
Corey was far from the only candidate told to shy away from Trump in a year that saw a huge shift toward Trump in Connecticut.
We even heard of "gentleman's agreements" among certain state candidates to do the same -- candidates would pretend that national politics had no impact whatsoever on local politics, so that they would never have to mention Trump's name.
Yet during his interview with YTN, Proto claimed he has always fully embraced and endorsed Trump.
"For context, in 2016, the current Connecticut GOP Chairman served as President Trump’s state campaign coordinator—a role that would seem like a point of pride," explains Corey. "Yet, this achievement is notably absent from public resumes and even the Connecticut GOP website which you can view at this link. To unify as a party, we need leadership that proudly owns its past roles and stands firmly in its convictions."
"Connecticut Republicans deserve clarity and a strategy that aligns public statements and private advice. We need leaders who champion our candidates and our values consistently—not only when it’s convenient," argues Corey.
He's not the only person who thinks Connecticut Republicans need a better leader.
Proto is a joke and needs to be replaced. Corey is a good man who was defeated by a corrupt machine known as the democRat party. CT as a whole has not true conservative values sadly it was reflected in the 2024 where the word salad spewing giggling liar look the electoral votes. Had she won, what do you think the pseudo-rich would have done when they imposed their unrecognized capitol gains taxes on their McMansions?! CT should remove the Constitution State moniker from their license plates.
