A group of MAGA patriots decided to hold a rally in Hamden on Sunday -- in the same location that progressive activists have held weekly protests under the banner of No Kings / Hands Off / etc., for approximately the last 35 weeks.
After the MAGA supporters assembled for their peaceful gathering, Mayor Lauren Garrett showed up with her ex-husband, Dan Garrett, and their son.
The Mayor told one of the people at the MAGA rally that he had to remove his flags, which were temporarily attached with velcro for the event. When the man politely asked if there was an ordinance prohibiting him from temporarily attaching the flags, Garrett could not cite one and became irate.
"Incredibly, the Mayor then tore down three flags herself before police intervened," wrote Cathleen Walsh on Facebook. "Unbelievable."
But earlier in the protest season, it was apparently okay for Garrett's side to attach a flag to a pole and lean a tent against the same handrails.
Rules for thee...

"Mayor Lauren Garrett of Hamden may be one of the worst mayors I have encountered in all my years," wrote Walsh. "Just look at her record—and the recent events in town."
After her encounter with the MAGA crew, Garrett happily joined the “No Kings” protesters and watched as a man in a keffiyeh scarf climbed and swung from the crosswalk without batting an eye.

"Apparently, flags are a problem—but people hanging from structures are not," said Walsh.
She was joined by conservatives Gino DiGiovanni, who is running for Town Clerk in Derby, and Chris Lancia, a US congressional hopeful, at the rally.

Dan Garrett, who ran unsuccessfully for State Rep in 2024, took to Facebook after the competing events to complain that he was troubled by both sides.
He said that No Kings was orchestrated by "two zionists" whose protests drew "attention away from the ongoing genocide in Palestine."
He characterized the Trump side as "incredibly troubling."
"The pro Trump side littered the memorial Town Hall with over 40 flags that were controversial and disgusting," wrote Dan before describing how the Mayor "courageously pulled a flag from the stair case it was attached to."
He lamented that he did not personally intervene and pull the Trump flags off Town Hall or stand up to "the fascists" the way his ex-wife did.

He further said that Hamden's Town Hall had "resembled the terrorist attack on the capital January 6th" and wished again that he had "removed the flags because of the embarrassment it brought to our town."
Then he promised that if the MAGA crew shows up again, that's exactly what he will do -- tear down their flags -- which sounds both intimidating and threatening.
"The one flag I was told I could remove was the flag of Israel," said Garrett.
Even the son got in on the Facebook comments after his mom was accused of showing bias and "attempting to infringe on other people's right to free expression and freedom to peaceably assemble."
He just laughed, and said, "what crime did I commit?"
By the way, Mayor Garrett is the one who called that wild emergency presser on October 16th after an ICE raid at a Hamden car wash. She called the actions of the Trump Administration and ICE "deplorable" and "disgusting" and further called Trump's presidency "inhumane."
So it's not exactly a surprise that she would call the police on a few friendly folks demonstrating their desire to make America great again.
