In a world filled with countless sources claiming to offer guidance, knowledge, and insight, the Bible presents a clear and unwavering message: true wisdom comes only from God. This divine wisdom stands in stark contrast to the dangerous practices of seeking answers from alternative sources including man and spirits, such as through a Ouija board. From a biblical perspective, these two paths represent not just different choices, but opposing spiritual realities—one, from God, leading to life and light, the other to deception and darkness.

The Divine Gift: Wisdom from God

The Scriptures repeatedly affirm that wisdom is a generous gift from the Lord Himself.

Proverbs 2:6 declares, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." Similarly, James 1:5 invites believers: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

The foundation of this wisdom is the "fear of the Lord"—a reverent awe and submission to God. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This wisdom is described as pure, peace-loving, gentle, merciful, and impartial (James 3:17). It is obtained through prayer, studying God's Word, and living in obedience to Him.

The Forbidden Path: Consulting Spirits Through a Ouija Board

In complete opposition to seeking God, a Reverend recently preached on turning to tools like the Ouija board to contact spirits. He believed that consulting spirits could lead to a greater knowledge, perhaps seeking answers, trying to find predictions, or even bestowing "wisdom" on people. As participants place their hands on a planchette, they ask questions as it seemingly moves to spell out responses from other sources such as the dead.

The Bible unequivocally condemns such practices. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 warns: "Let no one be found among you... who practices divination or sorcery... or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD." Leviticus 19:31 adds, "Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them." Isaiah 8:19 challenges: "Someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?"

These prohibitions stem from the reality that such communications often involve demonic forces masquerading as helpful spirits. James 3:15–16 contrasts "wisdom that comes down from heaven" with earthly wisdom that is "unspiritual, demonic," leading to envy, selfish ambition, and disorder.

    A Tragic Biblical Example

The dangers of turning to spirits are illustrated in the story of King Saul. Desperate for guidance, he consulted a medium to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 28). This act of disobedience contributed to his downfall, and Scripture later notes that Saul died because he "was unfaithful to the LORD" and "even consulted a medium for guidance" (1 Chronicles 10:13–14).

Choosing the Right Path toward Wisdom

The Bible's message is clear: True wisdom is a priceless gift freely offered by a loving God to those who seek Him in faith. Turning to any occult practice is not harmless fun—it is rebellion against God, inviting deception and spiritual harm.

As Proverbs 3:13–18 beautifully describes the blessings of godly wisdom: It is more profitable than silver, yields better returns than gold, and leads to a long, peaceful life. In an age of spiritual confusion, the call remains: Seek wisdom from its only true Source—the living God.
