There is a restoration of Christian faith happening; a wave of people returning to church and seeking to better understand the God of the Bible. What many in Connecticut may not know is that there are false preachers everywhere, especially in Connecticut pulpits. It can be very difficult for the average person to determine whether or not the church they have now joined is going to lead them to eternal salvation or damnation. Matthew 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing..." A church of God, preaching from the Bible, will guide those who are seeking truth in the right direction and steer us clear of sin.
What is “Idolatry”?
Idolatry is any type of worshiping that involves anything other than worshipping the one true God. This can include people, objects, images, or pursuits that are treated as if they were divine, or giving ultimate devotion, reverence, or priority to created things instead of to God alone.
At its core, Biblical idolatry means:
God Commands Us Against Idols
In the Bible, idolatry is one of the most condemned sins, directly violating the first two of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-5; Deuteronomy 5:7-9), which demand exclusive worship of God and prohibit making or bowing to any manmade images or likenesses.
Exodus 20:3-5:
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God...”
Deuteronomy 5:7-9:
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them...”
Biblical Judgement
The Bible provides several vivid examples of idol worship provoking God's wrath and leading to severe punishment, often in the form of death, plagues, destruction, or national exile.
The Old Testament portrays idolatry as spiritual adultery against God, often involving physical idols, and viewing an idol as a fundamental violation of exclusive worship to the one true God.
The New Testament broadens the concept while maintaining the core idea:
The Biblical stories serve as stark warnings about the seriousness of idolatry, which the Bible describes as spiritual unfaithfulness that arouses God's jealousy. God demands exclusive devotion and rejects any physical representation or rival "gods" that could divert worship from Him.
1 Corinthians 10:14: “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
Make Pursuing God The Priority of Your Life
An idol is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts—whether a literal statue or the things more commonly worshipped today including money, power, positions, relationships, or self. Even good things, like our families or ministries, can become idols when they are prioritized above God.
Isaiah 42:8: “I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.” God Himself is speaking here, and He refuses to share His glory with false gods or idols. His name (Yahweh/LORD) and His glory are inseparable—He demands exclusive praise because He alone is the true God. He is the Creator of heaven and earth, He sent His Son to remove our sins, worshiping anything above Him is a life of destruction and will lead to eternity without Him. The Bible's message is consistent: God alone is worthy of worship.
