"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4
On a recent Sunday, a children’s sermon about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a church in Connecticut preached an anti-Christian message. The older student leading the group taught the younger children that historical civil rights activists were referred to as “Holy Troublemakers.” In defining what this meant, the spirit of peacefully protesting was erased. Defiance, resistance, and breaking laws were promoted as necessary steps towards positive changes. This message was part of a Sunday service that was dedicated to teaching children well yet it completely missed the truth.
Responding to Authority in Love
"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Matthew 5:44
The Bible teaches the exact opposite of responding to authority with violence. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. drew heavily from Jesus’ teachings on love, and also the Christian principles of turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. He was a committed advocate and practitioner of nonviolent resistance throughout his life and leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. King explicitly taught others that nonviolent resistance included refusing to physically fight against and hate your opponents, and he viewed the nonviolence as an active resistance to evil through love for even his enemies.
"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." Romans 13:1-2
Raising Godly Children
The Bible has several clear passages instructing parents, especially fathers, to actively teach their children God's word, commandments, and ways. This is presented as a parental responsibility, not something that is to be delegated entirely to others like schools or religious leaders. The home is the primary place for discipleship and teaching the truth should happen naturally throughout daily life.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7:
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
Proverbs 22:6:
"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
Parents are to tell the next generation "the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord... so the next generation would know them... and they in turn would tell their children." Psalm 78:4-7 Raising children involves teaching obedience to God's commands, modeling love for God and neighbor, and equipping them for spiritual battles by grounding them in truth.
The Good vs. Evil Battle
Our children are exposed to evil everywhere and need to be trained in Christ in order to know truth from lies. The Bible addresses spiritual battles (often called spiritual warfare) as an ongoing reality for all believers. It describes a conflict not against physical people ("flesh and blood") but against invisible spiritual forces of evil—Satan, demons, and demonic influences—that oppose God, tempt believers, spread deception, and seek to disrupt faith and godly living.
The core biblical teaching is that believers are in a real spiritual struggle, but victory over evil comes through God's power, not human strength. Each of us can tap into that power through studying the Bible, prayer and our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior.
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
- Ephesians 6:10-12
