Turns out a lot of people wanted the answer after seeing a flyer announcing drag queen Summer Orlando’s performance at the Perrot Memorial Library in Old Greenwich for pride month.

We submitted a public records request for the invoice to Trish Tomlinson, the library’s director. She officially joined the staff on February 10, 2025, succeeding longtime director Kevin McCarthy, who retired after 27 years.

Tomlinson politely explained that the Perrot is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that operates independently from the Greenwich Library, with its own budget, staff, and governance. She noted that “all programs are funded through private donations and not with public funds.”

However, a disclaimer at the bottom of her email acknowledged that the Town of Greenwich “generously supports much of our base operational costs.” The Perrot Library budget is also included in the Town budget.

Tomlinson initially referred the request to the Town Legal Department. The following day, she wrote back to say that although the Library Board was uncertain whether the FOIA request was legally binding—since the Pride event was paid for with private funds—they would provide the invoice “in the interest of transparency.”

The answer is $700.

It costs $700 to hire a drag queen to perform for one hour at your local library. (The reservation was made 11 months in advance, which explains why the invoice is dated July 8, 2025.)

That amount is a small fraction of the $236,200 allocated for Supplies and Materials in the Perrot budget.

But taxpayers should know what their money is supporting.

Orlando has a busy (lucrative) pride month schedule lined up, including pride cabarets, drag bingo, and a drag storytime event in East Hampton for children. It’s not his first drag storytime there.

Based on his Greenwich rate, that’s at least $7,000 worth of performances.

By the way, Orlando’s one-man cabaret took place inside the Children’s Library, after regular operating hours, for an adults-only (18+) audience.

The library also has a separate pride event planned for children, along with eye-level book displays.
