A Stamford woman was harassed for her clothing choice while attending an event celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary at Putnam Cottage in Greenwich over the weekend. 

Zhennya Slootskin, a Russian immigrant, proudly wore a Trump shirt during her visit to the Colonial Herb Garden at the historic site where hops plants were discovered — possibly similar to those used to make ale in Knapp’s Tavern, also known as Putnam Cottage, 250 years ago.

As Slootskin was walking toward the parking lot exit, she was confronted by a woman driving a car with Rhode Island license plates. Triggered by the sight of the Trump shirt, the woman began yelling from her car window about “raping a 13-year-old girl” and insisted, “It’s in the f*cking files!”

“Yes, I’m amazed that you’re supporting a man that rapes little girls,” the woman said in a condescending tone. “Look at the FBI files — it’s in there.”

Slootskin said wearing a Trump shirt puts her in “imminent danger in Fairfield County.”

“This deranged woman proceeded to rant that she hoped I would get raped, that my 13-year-old daughter would get raped,” Slootskin recalled. “Once she heard my accent, in true liberal tolerant fashion, she wished I would get deported.”

Unfortunately, Slootskin said this was not the first time she had been harassed for wearing a Trump shirt. It’s the reason she quit the Darien YMCA last week.

The YMCA boasts about being respectful of everyone and valuing the “worth of every person.” The organization is quick to raise the pride flag, yet when Slootskin wore her Trump shirt to the gym, she claims she was harassed by both members and the Fitness Director.

“They tolerate harassing and humiliating a paying member for wearing a shirt they don’t like,” Slootskin said. “The head trainer — a six-foot-tall muscle-bound man — confronted me and said my Trump shirt was an act of aggression as he stood towering over me while his wife taunted me. This went on for a year. I asked them to stop. Finally, I had to walk away.”

Slootskin is frustrated that harassing Trump supporters in public has become normalized, especially in deep-blue Connecticut.

“It is up to each of us not to succumb to the bullying of the left, not to be silent, and not to tolerate this behavior,” she said.

She plans to keep proudly wearing her Trump shirt — and hopes the Connecticut GOP will stand up strongly to protect Trump-supporting Republicans who are regularly attacked in the state.
