ICE Boston arrested Maximo Garcia-Lopez, an illegal alien from Guatemala, on September 18 after he allegedly made an illegal turn in a 60-foot tractor-trailer in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and crashed into another vehicle. A young child in that vehicle required emergency medical attention and was hospitalized.

Garcia-Lopez had no commercial driver’s license and no driver’s license of any kind. That fact did not stop him from operating an 18-wheeler. It also did not stop Connecticut police from sending him back onto the road after a traffic stop.

On September 4 — just two weeks before the crash — Connecticut authorities cited Garcia-Lopez as an unlicensed operator of a 60-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer belonging to YMY Transport LLC of Virginia. Inspectors found 31 additional violations on the freightliner he was driving.

A man with no legal status and no license was behind the wheel of a 60-foot commercial vehicle on Connecticut roads. State inspectors documented more than two dozen violations, yet he was allowed to continue operating the same class of vehicle that later put a child in the hospital in Massachusetts.

ICE Boston eventually took Garcia-Lopez into custody. Connecticut had him first. Sadly, the child in Marlborough paid the price for the gap between those two events.
