Can you imagine posting the below image on social media, and then when asked about the image, denying that it's a swastika?

Yet that is exactly what happened in a public forum when East Granby resident Bob Margolis challenged East Granby's democrat First Selectman candidate, Jason Hayes, about his May 11, 2025, post comparing Nazism to "MAGAism."

Margolis, who is Jewish, described the image of a Nazi swastika decorated with stars as "particularly disgusting, offensive and antisemitic."

"When I confronted Jason about this, he laughed at me and told me that he was referring to "beating MAGA" and that he was not antisemitic," said Margolis. "I noted that if this was a billboard or a banner from a building, everyone driving by would know exactly what it was and that it's clearly an antisemitic symbol recognized around the world. This is hate speech."

Margolis indicated that he had shared the offensive image, along with another post made by Hayes, in an email to conservatives in town. He was subsequently encouraged to post his message and images to local East Granby Facebook groups, but he didn't want to violate the community standards. So he decided to post his comments to his personal page instead.

Margolis told the Centinal that he feels Democrats are trying to turn the election into a referendum on zoning after The Silverman Group's plans for a couple of warehouses drew pushback from residents. While the tax revenue is attractive, residents are concerned about all of the additional truck traffic, noise, lights and related pollution.

East Granby First Selectwoman Eden Wimpfheimer previously attempted to clear up misinformation about the Silverman Project that was being spread by her opponent, Hayes.

But Margolis alleges that Hayes continued to spread misinformation, including about a potential "sound stage" project in town.

"Hayes lied to The Hartford Courant by telling them that The Silverman Group was "very interested" in developing a Sound Stage building here in town. At the recent P&Z meeting, Silverman denied this on the record," Margolis said. "Hayes is trying to run a confidence game on the residents of East Granby by telling us that sound stages and theatre entertainment venue's will save our town."

"Whether you're in favor of the current proposals or against them, you should know that the zoning was approved by the previous (democratic) administration and it appears that the development is within zoning regulations," Margolis explained. "The zoning board literally can't deny them, and if they do they will sue the town and win. Like it or hate it, the time to object to this was when the Democrats approved the zoning in the first place."

Margolis accused Hayes of being "far, far left of the DTC" which he said, "should tell you a lot about their values and plans for our future."

The most ironic thing about Hayes' swastika post is that he's the founder and organizer for "Disarm Hate"... but he's apparently not terribly interested in disarming all "hate", is he?
