According to the 2026 College Free Speech Rankings, the University of Connecticut ranks 215 out of 257 schools with a score of 53, an F speech climate grade.

The school's policies further earn a “yellow light” rating, since the university has yet to endorse an official commitment to institutional neutrality.

UConn ranked in the bottom 25 for both “Comfort” and “Self-Censorship,” and in the bottom 50 for “Openness” -- perhaps an indication that students keep know the drill, and keep quiet rather than risk speaking their minds.

Indeed, when we interviewed UConn students who wished to remain off the record for obvious reasons, we were told that "you always know" which teachers are progressive, and rather than risking a low grade, students will simply adjust their work and interactions accordingly.

One conservative student shared an experience from a political science class last year in which students were asked to "fact check" a campaign speech by President Donald Trump.

The student explained that several of the "fact checks" provided by classmates were actually incorrect and easily disproved, so the student corrected the record, and included reliable sources to verify the facts.

The student described what happened next as a "one v. 26 match-up" where all of the students in the class, along with the professor, ganged up against the conservative student.

The professor responded to the conservative student, indicating that the facts were correct, but the general sentiment was that "Trump was just so awful" that the facts didn't matter.

After that the student received threatening email messages from a classmate that were shared with the University, but nothing happened to the student making the threats.

Now the student simply self censors to avoid getting harassed.

What a sorry state of affairs at UConn for conservative students.
