Educators in at least one New London school received a reminder today about how they are supposed to act in the event that ICE shows up to the front door.
"Just wanted to send out a refresher about ICE protocols. In this email, you will find several helpful resources and reminders regarding ICE. As always, please reach out if you have any questions at all," said the email from Chris Vamvakides, Principal of Bennie Dover Jackson Multi-Magnet Middle School.
The email contained a few slides, a set of protocols and a presentation from Shipman & Goodwin on Immigration Enforcement Activities and Connecticut's K-12 Public Schools.
Note this is the same law firm that employs Speaker of the House Matt Ritter, who coincidentally blew up yesterday over another legislator's "ICE IN" jacket.
According to the documents, New London likes to use certain preferred words... for instance, "undocumented" instead of "illegal"... and phrases like "I'm here to listen" instead of "everything's going to be okay."
They made it clear that not all students in the Transitional Bilingual Education program are "undocumented" and that "undocumented" students are also "in mainstream too."
The part about "notification to New London Police Department regarding ICE locations" seems curious.
Students who make "inappropriate comments" about immigration status can be expected to be written up in a "major referral."
And teachers are encouraged, should they feel comfortable, to take photos and/or video of ICE interactions.
