Connecticut Attorney Deborah G. Stevenson, the founder of National Home Education Legal Defense, issued an urgent warning to homeschoolers, parochial schools, and private schools last week:

"SENATE BILL 6 WILL DESTROY YOUR RIGHTS -  YOU WILL BE REPORTED TO DCF IF YOU DARE TO WITHDRAW FROM ENROLLMENT IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON."

"Senator Looney, together with Representative Corey Paris, have just placed a revised bill SB6 before the Children’s Committee that requires the reporting of EVERY PARENT who dares to withdraw their child from a public school to the Department of Children and Families for investigation," wrote Stevenson. "That means that ANY PARENT who withdraws their child from enrollment in a public school, for ANY REASON, whether it is to go to a private school, homeschool, or to another public school, will be reported to DCF for investigation, just for withdrawing."

"That completely removes the presumption of innocence from ALL parents who withdraw their children, and seriously chills the freedom of parents whose children remain enrolled in public schools, by instilling in those parents a real fear knowing that they will be reported to DCF just for withdrawing, thereby coercing those parents into leaving their children enrolled in the public school," Stevenson explained.

She called the bill an "outrageous and a total destruction of liberty" since parents would have their "presumption of innocence removed" and could be "improperly coerced into remaining in the failing public school system against their will."

"This is NOT the way our system of government works. This is a blatant disregard of our system of government, and an apparent attempt to destroy that system of government and the rights of parents," asserted Stevenson. "These are not tactics employed by those who took an oath of allegiance to our Constitution.  These are the tactics of autocracies and dictators in violation of their oaths."

Senate Bill 6 was introduced by the Committee on Children on February 4th with 26 co-sponsors. A public hearing will be held tomorrow, March 3rd.

Concerned residents are urged to contact their legislators, and to submit testimony.

So far, a majority of those who have submitted public comments wrote in opposition.
