Greenwich Academy (GA) is so committed to promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), that the headline is listed twice on the school's webpage.

The elite, private girls school has adopted Social Justice Standards: The Teaching Tolerance Anti-Bias Framework throughout all grades and divisions to ensure that all students are “seeing themselves reflected in the curriculum” and are “developing essential cultural competencies."

GA uses a framework and curriculum developed by Tolerance.org, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, also known as “SPLC Learning for Justice”.

Learning for Justice seeks to uphold the mission of the SPLC:  to be a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working "to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements and advance the human rights of all people.”

As you know by now, the term intersectionality was coined by Kimberle Crenshaw to offer a way of describing simultaneous oppressions of race, gender, and sexuality.  It is deeply connected to the concept of Critical Race Theory (CRT), of which Crenshaw is considered to be a key architect.

The goal of the Social Justice Standards program seems to be creating social justice warriors. In fact, the “desired outcome” for the final “action” goal listed in the program states: "

I will join with diverse people to plan and carry out collective action against exclusion, prejudice and discrimination, and we will be thoughtful and creative in our actions in order to achieve our goals.”

Toward that end, teachers are encouraged to use SPLC resources that will help students "explore identity and diversity, recognize injustice and learn to take action.”  The topics are divided into the following categories:  Race & EthnicityReligionAbilityClassImmigrationGender & Sexual IdentityBullying & Bias, and Rights & Activism.

For example, Race & Ethnicity includes topics like "Why Teaching Black Lives Matter Matters” and "Discussing Whiteness".  The Gender & Sexual Identity topics include articles like “Gender Affirming Care: What it is and Why it’s Necessary” and "Sex? Sexual Orientation? Gender Identity? Gender Expression”.

GA also offers affinity spaces and programs in the middle school, upper school and for faculty as part of its DEIB efforts.

However, it should be noted that affinity groups have come under fire for dividing students by color, something which is potentially unconstitutional.

Tuition at GA ranges from $44,960 for preschool and kindergarten to $50,400 for high school… to have your daughters learn CRT from the SPLC — a controversial organization that has been criticized for both its financial practices and also for characterizing conservative organizations as equivalent to hate groups.
