“Of the deadly sins, only envy is no fun at all.” - Joseph Epstein
Toddlers often just take a toy from a playmate without warning. Perhaps the toddler feels envy. Perhaps they are just curious. What must a parent do? Child psychologists often just recommend letting the children work it out. Children are learning to navigate in the complex world of relationships. Parent involvement to resolve the conflict may create a dependency. Allowing the children to learn how to work out their own conflicts gives them the skills they will need for the rest of their lives.
The Democrat Party could learn from this guidance. The party is struggling to clearly define their brand message since losing the presidency in 2024. Their foundational philosophy of Marxism encourages division between two disparate groups, the oppressed and oppressor. The party encourages division and conflict by manufacturing a perceived crisis. They stoke feelings of racism, unequal pay, unequal rights, and powerlessness to motivate voters.
The party is searching for a brand message. I suggest, “We create envy to gain power and solve issues.”
Envy is an emotion. It’s a feeling of discontent and desire to covet. Envy is deadly sin and is captured in the last of the Ten Commandments, “Thou shall not covet.” Immanuel Kant described envy as the “tendency to perceive with displeasure the good of others.”
As many bible verses explain, covetousness is the forerunner of all manner of sin.
“Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” – James 1:15
The desire to create envy has led to the death of the Democrat party’s influence. Senator Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, said that the Democrat Party’s brand is "really problematic" and castigated his party for losing touch with working people.
Has the Democrat Party lost touch? It consistently sends clear messages to their voters to envy those who have better healthcare, higher income, greater privilege, a better job, a better school, etc. This messaging reinforces the inequities in society and stokes strong emotions encouraging inappropriate behaviors, even violence. We’ve all seen the vandalism of Tesla dealerships, the Black Lives Matter riots, and even the assassination attempts on President Trump.
The Democrat party brand messaging is embodied in the promotion of policies such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Social Justice. Continued promotion of these policies leads to feelings of resentment and hatred for their neighbors instead of encouraging love of their neighbor and gratitude for blessings.
“We are one, our cause is one, and we must help each other if we are to succeed.”- Fredrick Douglass
DEI and Envy
Marxist philosophy causes envy. The oppressed (victims) are injured by oppressors. The WOKE agenda is based on Marxist philosophy. One race is oppressed by another race. Being WOKE requires we fix this inequity. The promotion of inequity creates envy.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is the method the left and the Democrat party uses to be WOKE. Instead of focusing on what unites, diversity is about acknowledging and accepting differences. A focus on differences encourages envy.
Equity requires a forced distribution of outcomes. Equality is about equal opportunity for success. Equity encourages envy. Equality of opportunity encourages individual effort and personal responsibility.
Inclusion is about welcoming all individuals regardless of differences in race, religion, genetics, gender, origin, etc.
The DEI programs in organizations are a strategy to avoid the risk of being perceived as racist. The White House recently issued an executive order to neuter this liability risk. This risk is due to a condition called disparate impact. Disparate impact is the assumption that racism (or some other form of discrimination) is the cause of unequal outcomes for individuals or groups.
“A bedrock principle of the United States is that all citizens are treated equally under the law. This principle guarantees equality of opportunity, not equal outcomes. It promises that people are treated as individuals, not components of a particular race or group.” (Trump, 2025)
Some airlines have given preference to women and people of color when hiring pilots. Instead of focusing on performance standards, airline leadership gives priority to gender and race as the most important factors for choosing new hires. We have seen how universities force an increase in minority enrollment often by lowering application standards.
There are serious unintended consequences of adopting DEI policies. Forming new departments and policies can significantly increase expenses. It also can welcome charges for violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Envy stoked by DEI leads to poor results, increased costs and other unintended consequences. For these reasons and others, The White House issued their executive order ending disparate impact.
Positive results return when DEI is avoided. Pete Hegseth, when approved as Defense Secretary, made significant changes. He reinstated and reinforced priorities by improving the lethality, meritocracy, accountability, and readiness standards of warriors. He dismantled the DEI and WOKE policies. His strategy created a surge in recruitment to a 15 year high.
Social Justice
Justice means fairness. Social Justice is the existence of fairness in society for healthcare, employment, housing, education, income etc. Of course, we want fairness, but Social Justice demands the government force equal outcomes in these areas. Social justice warriors claim levels of inequality are unfair, systemic, and must be addressed with government policy. This lack of fairness stokes feelings of helplessness and envy.
Social Justice also has its foundation in envy because it assumes the perceived inequity is due to factors outside of personal responsibility and individual efforts. It assumes the inequity is from systemic racism or some other discriminations. Actions based on envy will naturally lead to unintended consequences. For example, the Canadian Healthcare system was designed to provide equality in services. Canadians experience long wait times for medical procedures, shortages of healthcare providers, and a lack of investment in the latest technology.
Summary
Envy is the foundation for the Democrat Party strategies of DEI and Social Justices.
A typical distribution of most things in life can be described using the 80-20 rule (Pareto Principle). For example:
It can be costly to force a re-distribution of resources. Instead of a show of force, effective leadership skills are needed instead. Assuming the distribution of resources is solely due to some systemic discrimination is illogical and irresponsible because this ignores other influential factors such as innate desire, individual effort, and personal responsibility.
Dozens of large organizations have eliminated their DEI programs. Why would they do this unless the foundations of these programs were profoundly flawed? The flaw is in the foundation, i.e. the deadly sin of envy.
It’s often appropriate to allow children to solve their own conflicts. It encourages personal responsibility and avoids unhealthy parental dependence. Can the Democrat party learn from this approach? Will they allow those who need to improve outcomes to work it out themselves. Of course we want to help those who cannot help themselves. But do we really want unnecessary policies which increase costs and reduce performance because they’re based on a deadly sin?
