The East Lyme Democrats have announced that the upcoming "Drag Yourself to Brunch" FUNdraiser on July 23rd will support the East Lyme democratic slate of municipal candidates and also the East Lyme Public School Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) clubs.
East Lyme Public Schools, which refers LGBTQ children to controversial organizations that have been accused of grooming children (e.g., GLSEN, The Trevor Project), operates GSA clubs in both the middle school and the high school.
Drag Queen Patty Bourree, the headliner for the fundraiser, serves as a leader for the Boston Branch of Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) and has held "Let's Say Gay" DQSH events for young children.
“The power of drag is that you can be anything you want to be,” Bourree said in an interview. “You can express yourself. There's drag performers that look all kinds of different, crazy, fun ways, and we think in my community that that's a great thing to show kids, that it shows kids that they can choose their own destiny.”
"What 'Let's Say Gay' is about [is] saying that it's okay to talk about these issues with kids," Bourree said. "That's not something that's going to harm them. It's not something that's dangerous to them. It's something that lets them know about the reality they live in."
Not dangerous?
Bourree also said of DQSH that the "events are just so wholesome" and that "third through fifth graders are surprisingly ready to have conversations about gender identity."
He also admitted that every DQSH he's done recently has drawn protests.
Wonder why?
