A courageous man has stepped up to the plate and is running for the Republican nomination for the Connecticut U.S. Senate seat presently held by Chris Murphy. Gerry Smith, the First Selectman of Beacon Falls, announced his candidacy to a receptive crowd at the VFW in Prospect in early February.

I had breakfast with him several weeks ago and liked him immediately, first because he was sparing me the prospect of running, but more importantly, because he was a great candidate.

Gerry exudes the confidence of a natural leader. And unlike many of our U.S. Senate candidates in the past, this is a man who knows how to win elections, having done so four times, the last by 84%.

    First Selectman Gerry Smith

He is aware of the polarization in the country and like many of us with grandchildren, their future is his motivation for running – not personal glory or power. He is conservative on social issues and is pro-life but sees little sense in an outright ban. He opposes gun control and is suspicious of the climate change movement.

But his main concerns are the bread-and-butter issues of safe streets, good schools, inflation, affordable health care and stopping illegal immigration. He has seen firsthand the unaffordability of health care with avaricious CEOs laughing all the way to the bank and will be addressing this issue in the future.

He is the rare politician who sees himself as a consensus builder, willing to reach out to the opposition and forge compromises. As a First Selectman, he has learned that he does not always get exactly what he wants.

He has a tough fight on his hands as his opponent is Chris Murphy, who has been a political fixture in Connecticut for decades and has raised over $9,000,000. But under Murphy’s leadership, Connecticut has not fared well. We have become a state of rich and poor with the middle class working like dogs – holding down two and three jobs – just to pay housing costs, health care premiums not to mention energy costs, grocery bills along with an endless array of taxes.

Murphy caters to Connecticut’s white upper middle class, who have little interest in economic security, low crime or health care because they already have it. They live in towns like Avon, Greenwich and Darien which are protected by virtual moats of high housing prices and zoning restrictions.

The main issues for these people are abortion, gun control and climate change and that is all Murphy talks about. His latest attempt to bamboozle the public into accepting an immigration plan that legalized illegal immigration failed miserably. And he has shown little concern as rural hospitals in Connecticut close specialty services and obstetric care to increase the bottom line for corporations, real estate trusts and hospital conglomerates.

Connecticut is one of the few states that still has a Convention system which means Gerry will have to waste endless hours speaking to town committees to secure a position on the ballot, especially if he is challenged by other candidates.

The political class in Connecticut may be inclined to write Gerry off since no Republican has won a U.S. Senate race since 1982 (Lowell Weicker for you trivia fans), but the average person is tired of living paycheck to paycheck with maxed out credit cards while listening to Murphy and the rich Democrats trying to force them to buy overpriced electric cars to supposedly save the planet while they hang out on yachts and tool around in gas-guzzling SUVs.

Gerry may just surprise everyone. He’s a good man.

I have already contributed to Gerry’s campaign and urge others to do the same.
