More than a hundred people gathered at Greenwich Town Hall to celebrate the nation's birthday in a beautiful ceremony organized by the Independence Day Association of Greenwich.
The Sound Beach Community Band provided live music, including the Assembly Trumpet Call before the ceremonial rifle fire by the Greenwich Police Department Honor Guard got the program started.
Elected officials, including Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camilo offered remarks, followed by a presentation of 13 colonial flags by the Greenwich Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, a reading of I Am The Flag by teens representing the Arch Street Teen Center, and a flag raising.
After the Star-Spangled Banner and the Pledge of Allegiance, a group of Greenwich Students offered readings from the Declaration of Independence. Five students were selected for this honor, including: Steele Barhydt, Briar Lissauer, Annetta Solari, George Solari and Max Quigley.
Good Citizen Awards were presented to students in each Greenwich school. Congratulations go to award winners: Michael Bocchino (Greenwich High School), Leo Corsano-Leopizzi (Greenwich Country Day), Isabella Leao (Sacret Heart), John Riehl (Brunswick School) and Zoe Tulchinsky (Greenwich Academy).
The descendants of Revolutionary War Patriots were recognized, while tribute was paid to Greenwich citizens who lost their lives during the American Revolutionary War.
The program concluded with a moment of silence, followed by a 21-gun salute (well, actually a 9-gun salute), the playing of Taps by the Sound Beach Community Band, and a delicious birthday cake and refreshments for everyone.
God Bless America!
