Greenwich High School Freshman Football parents just received a rather unsettling message from Superintendent Toni Jones, High School Principal Ralph Mayo and Peter Georgiou, the Director of Athletics.
The email detailed “a disturbing incident that occurred with one of the team buses last night on the return trip from West Haven.”
The incident involved one of the bus drivers getting confused “due to heavy traffic and construction detours on Interstate 95 in the Norwalk area” and subsequently re-entering I-95 headed in the wrong direction with a busload of athletes and coaches.
Fortunately, due to a road closure, there was little oncoming traffic and the bus was able to make a u-turn and exit down the ramp.
Everyone arrived home safely.
Greenwich is demanding that the bus company, First Student, conduct a full investigation of the incident, including a GPS review of video footage from the bus.
The email to parents said that the district insisted on not using that bus driver for any “long routes after school hours” pending the results of an investigation.
But that left parents wondering… but what about short routes? What about trips during school hours? Or field trips?
“Should the investigation deem this account that we received accurate, an intensive re-training will be conducted. We have also asked them to be proactive with additional training for their drivers to ensure this kind of incident does not reoccur,” said the email to parents.
Other minor issues with buses have been reported since the beginning of the school year, including long delays for some buses at the high school last week.
But this is the first time we’ve heard about something as scary driving the wrong way down I-95!
