We are not sure if you are aware of the rather shocking news about fluoridated water that has come to light after a court ruling last month determined water fluoridation at current U.S. levels poses an “unreasonable risk” of reduced IQ in children.
Considering the Greenwich Health Department, in conjunction with Greenwich Public Schools, conducts fluoride rinse programs for children in grades 1-5, we thought it was important to bring this issue to the attention of the First Selectman, the Health Department and the Superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools.
Last month’s 80-page ruling offers considerable, compelling scientific data regarding the damage fluoride can cause to brain health, especially for children and pregnant women.
After the judge's ruling, the attorney for the plaintiff in the case said, "the court has shown that the widespread exposure to fluoride that we now have in the United States is unreasonably and precariously close to the levels that we know cause harm.”
The judge further ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will need to enact a regulation to eliminate the risk, but thus far the EPA hasn't issued a comment other than to say it is reviewing how it plans to proceed.
The Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) responded to the ruling by issuing a statement to reaffirm its stance that "community water fluoridation is safe" and "beneficial to oral health" despite the extensive evidence cited in the ruling.
CSDA's statement also flies in the face of recent research that finds adding fluoride to water provides at best very limited dental health benefits, potentially reducing tooth decay by only about a quarter of one baby tooth at the risk of reduced IQ.
Now we are learning that the CDC has changed its website regarding water fluoridation in a manner that suggests it wants to shift responsibility to towns and voters. It now includes a notice that says:
CDC does not mandate community water fluoridation. The U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) recommended fluoride level is not an enforceable standard.
In light of this new information, we are hoping that GPS and the Health Department will consider immediately stopping all fluoridation programs in schools, and take steps to update its guidance document to reflect the truth about fluoride.
Tackling how to remove fluoride from the Town’s water supply to ensure that all families are safe is a much bigger issue… especially since water fluoridation became a law in Connecticut on May 18, 1965, initiated by Public Act 156, pursuant to Connecticut General Statute Section 19a-38.
But in the meantime, you can take steps to protect yourself by switching to fluoride-free toothpaste and installing a water filtration system than can remove fluoride from your tap water.
