The Greenwich Board of Education and GPS Superintendent Toni Jones were challenged by Greenwich Patriots over why the school maintains a relationship with the American Library Association (ALA).
The President of the ALA, Emily Drabinski, is a self-admitted Marxist who has made shocking and controversial statements about using the library to subvert “normal family types” as well as to make anti-white statements. The letter reminded the BOE and Superintendent that the goal for Marxists like Drabinski, of course, is communism.
It turns out Drabinski just attended the largest socialist conference in the country over the weekend, where she was caught "saying explicitly that libraries (and public schools) need to be sites of socialist organizing." She actually said that out loud?
The Patriots' email asked the BOE and Superintendent to explain why, under any scenario, Greenwich Public Schools should be tied to an organization like the ALA. Or why the district would be promoting recommended book reading lists from an organization as biased the ALA. The Patriots also wondered why there aren't any book lists with a conservative bias among their "award-winning" book lists.
The group called for the district to leave the ALA, and to look for a more politically-neutral organization to help guide school libraries, such as the World Library Association.
If the district chooses to remain in the ALA, then the Patriots have requested to see the district's plans for balancing out political perspectives to ensure that GPS is not reinforcing Drabinski's blatant biases, especially since the schools are supposed to be politically neutral.
Questions or comments about the district's relationship with ALA can be directed to the Greenwich BOE and/or the Superintendent.
