This past Saturday, July 1st, marked my sixteenth anniversary as Executive Director of the Family Institute of Connecticut.
It has been my tradition, ever since my first anniversary, to take stock of where we are in the fight for faith and family. So where do things stand in 2023? How will we look back on this year?
I think 2023 will be remembered as the year of "the turn."
We are reaching the point where people have finally had enough. All across the country, Americans are rising up against the anti-family agendas of the Woke and saying, "No more."
Some of this you already know. The boycotts against Bud Light and Target. The pushback in our libraries and our classrooms.
But what I want to emphasize is that it is happening even in Connecticut. Consider this propaganda piece on the front page of Sunday's Hartford Courant:
"In Connecticut, the month of [Pride] celebration and liberation was met with an unparalleled level of attacks on the state’s LGBTQ+ population, from calls for book bans in Newtown and Old Lyme, to vandalism in Middletown, to parental outrage over Pride videos in Southington and Granby, to the tarnishing of a Pride display at an Essex library, to 'groomer' signs posted in Greenwich, and a Sunday sermon interrupted with hate speech in Enfield."
Of course, there were no "attacks" on anyone. But there was, yes, a lot of "parental outrage."
Our intrepid Courant reporter could not be bothered to interview a single Connecticut resident to learn why they might object to Pride Month. Perhaps she would not have been able to process it. For the Woke, any objection to their agenda could only be motivated by "hate."
But if we still had real journalism at The Hartford Courant, I would have suggested that she begin with this display at the Waterbury Barnes and Noble yesterday:
A board book for toddlers to learn their "Gay BCs." And one for toddlers to go "Bye Bye Binary." These were displayed in the center aisle, right in front of the children's section.
And that is it. That right there. That is why 2023 is the Year of the Turn.
You won't see this display in The Hartford Courant. Just as you won't see the graphic images of homosexual activity that are in the books that Connecticut parents are trying to remove from school libraries.
The Courant would have you believe that the pushback is all just some irrational spasm of "hate" or "censorship." The work of rubes manipulated by illusory threats.
The reality is that parents have had enough. And they are finally doing something about it.
Twenty years ago some people stumbled over the question, "How does same-sex marriage affect you?" But that agenda has mutated quite a bit since then. No one has trouble answering the "How does it affect you?" question anymore.
Not when it's in your schools. And in the children's section of your library. And your local bookstore.
Not when schools are transing kids against their parents' wishes. Or without even their knowledge.
Not when young people are undergoing life-altering surgeries that they can never undo. And the press simply hides the ill effects or lies to us about it.
No, no one has trouble answering that question anymore. And people who could not see it then, see it now.
I recently had dinner with some childhood friends. Like most of the people I grew up with, they disapproved of my work on behalf of the pro-family cause these past twenty years.
No more. They are horrified by what is being done to the nation's children. They told me I was right all along. And that I should feel vindicated.
That is where we are at, sixteen after I became executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut. "It is always darkest before the dawn." My sense is that a pro-family "dawn," of some sort, is coming.
I want to thank all of you, FIC's members, for standing by us as we continue to fight for the family. It is your faith, your hope, and your love that has supported me, my staff, and my family throughout these sixteen years.
If we are at a turn toward a brighter future, that too, is because of your steadfast support. I am grateful to you and to Almighty God. FIC will continue to fight for you, and for Him, for so long as he wills it.
