In a long-overdue and thoroughly welcome move, President Donald J. Trump today signed an Executive Order establishing Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations that should finally put American parents back in the driver’s seat and align our nation’s immunization guidance with hard evidence and the practices of peer developed countries.

The move represents a restoration of common sense, parental authority, and scientific restraint.

The Order recommends routine immunizations for all children against 11 diseases—down from the 18 the CDC pushed in 2024. Vaccines for the remaining diseases shift to shared clinical decision-making between parents and physicians. The combined MMR shot is to be offered as three separate single-disease vaccines, and all shots are recommended during separate medical visits so families can better control timing and frequency. States with school-entry requirements are strongly advised to update their laws accordingly. Federal agencies are directed to advance these recommendations, and the HHS Task Force on Safer Childhood Vaccines must deliver plans for ongoing risk-benefit evaluation grounded in both U.S. and international data.

This is precisely what the evidence demanded.

An HHS scientific assessment released earlier this year showed the United States recommending more childhood vaccines—and far more doses—than any peer nation. In 1980, children following the CDC schedule received 23 doses in seven shots against seven diseases. By 2024 that had ballooned to at least 84 doses in 57 or more shots for 17 diseases, plus an RSV monoclonal antibody, for a total of 18. Many European countries achieve strong uptake with far leaner schedules and without the heavy-handed mandates that became common in American states. Trust and education, not compulsion, remain the norm abroad.

President Trump’s action builds directly on the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission he launched in 2025, the subsequent assessments and strategy documents, and earlier directives that began realigning U.S. recommendations with international best practices. It also continues the administration’s rejection of one-size-fits-all COVID-19 vaccine guidance for healthy children in favor of individualized clinical judgment.

Most importantly, the Order explicitly maximizes parental choice. It reinforces constitutional and federal protections for religious freedom, medical exemptions, disability accommodations, and equal protection for all.

Governor Ned Lamont called President Trump’s executive order dangerous and lacking scientific support, claiming it revives a discredited vaccine-autism link and undermines public health.

He pointed to the law he signed earlier this year that expands the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s authority to set immunization standards, arguing the Executive Order proves why the state needs independence from federal political shifts.

Public Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani stated that Connecticut will continue to follow "evidence-based vaccination recommendations."
