Text chain messages obtained from the government-issued cellphone of former White House COVID czar Dr. Anthony Fauci reveal he privately warned his colleagues in the nation’s top health agency posts of a concern that symptoms experienced by pregnant women after the second dose of the mRNA COVID shot “could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester” of pregnancy” – but urged pregnant women to get it anyway.
U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin), chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released on Monday one of the redacted text chain messages obtained from Fauci’s government-issued cellphone which was provided by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on August 5, in response to a request from Johnson.
According to a press statement from Johnson’s office, the text chain released “could have an immediate impact o[n] public health and the principle of informed consent.”
The chain released reveals conversation among Fauci, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. Rochelle Walensky, and former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. The texts are dated from January 25-26, 2021, and the focus of discussion among the three government officials is pregnant women taking the COVID-19 shot.
The texts in the chain show Murthy appearing to start off a discussion by asking if either Fauci or Walensky are “aware of any data or theoretical reason why vaccinating early vs late in pregnancy would be preferred?”
“And any sense of when there will be more robust data on vaccine risk in pregnant women?” Murthy continued. “I’ve been telling pregnant women that there hasn’t been evidence of concerning adverse outcomes in the trials though the number of pregnant subjects was likely have been limited.”
Walensky and Fauci appear to agree that, as Fauci replied, “There are no data or theoretical reason to believe that vaccinating early versus later in pregnancy would be preferred.”
“Yet, some people (even female health care professionals) feel concerned about injecting a ‘genetic’ vaccine very early in pregnancy,” Fauci continued. “There is this misperception out there that we need to deal with that mRNA somehow can ‘get into your genes’. When the misperception gets extended to an early developing fetus, the anxiety heightens.”
Johnson’s office then highlights this next “key text” from the chain from Fauci, in which he wrote, “I asked around a bit more and another issue came up that you need to be aware of. Since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the 2nd dose, this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.”
In response to Fauci’s warning, Walensky responded, “Definitely a good point, esp after dose two.”
“This is really helpful, thanks,” Murthy also responded. “I’ve been hearing the concern about the mRNA causing mutations in the developing fetus as well. That’s a really good point re the cytokine storm post second dose.”
Murthy later asked his two colleagues if they saw the announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO) in which “they advise against pregnant women taking the Moderna vaccine bc of lack of data?”
“It has led to a flurry of questions,” Murthy wrote. “What is your take? I imagine we will all get asked about this.”
Fauci replied that “any vaccine in which data are lacking in pregnant women one must weigh the potential risks against the benefits.”
“COVID-19 can be a serious disease especially in pregnancy,” Fauci continued. “In the vaccine trials, pregnant women were not allowed but following the EUA, a large number (more than 10,000) pregnant women have been vaccinated. No issues have arisen. The FDA and the ACIP andid the the ACOG are all permissive for pregnant women to have a choice. Animal tox studies did not raise any red flags.”
Yet, just days after his warning, as Johnson’s office observes, Fauci told JAMA Network on February 3, 2021, that “[FDA] have found thus far and we have to be careful but thus far no red flags about that, about pregnant women.”
Later that year, in August, Fauci also said during an interview that “10s and 10s and 10s of thousands of women who have been followed by the CDC, who have been vaccinated when they were pregnant, there’s no indication whatsoever that there’s any increase of any adverse issues in a pregnant woman who was vaccinated compared to a pregnant woman who wasn’t vaccinated … it’s pretty clear that pregnant women should get vaccinated.”
In September, Walensky’s CDC announced it “strongly recommends COVID-19 vaccination either before or during pregnancy because the benefits of vaccination outweigh known or potential risks.”
“Walensky also told a White House COVID-19 briefing that studies show COVID-19 vaccines are safe for pregnant women,” Johnson’s office notes.
In February 2022, Murthy urged pregnant women to get the mRNA COVID shot.
“It’s all the more important for you to get vaccinated if you are pregnant or if you are trying to become pregnant,” he said, adding that “[t]he data points show that the vaccines are safe during these various stages before and during pregnancy … They found generally that anytime during your pregnancy is actually fine [to get the vaccine], and that’s why the recommendation is just to get it.”
According to Johnson’s office, Fauci’s government cellphone “contains more than 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails.”
The statement points out, however, that “[o]ddly, only three contacts are listed” and “all other text messages are identified only with phone numbers rather than contact names.”
“It is too early to determine whether any data has been deleted,” Johnson’s office says.
Matthew Herper, a senior medical writer at STAT, considered to be a publication that is supportive of establishment medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, defended Fauci’s texts Monday in a post on X.”
“This seems to be a pretty willful case of selective quoting -- Fauci does not seem to be suggesting this is a big concern, just an idea to be aware of,” Herper wrote, adding that Fauci’s texts simply state what he said publicly.
Herper then asserts he agrees with Fauci.
“I also don’t think there are any data supporting this concern,” he said. “I’ll include some relevant studies below.”
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, however, asserted that the text revealed from Fauci’s phone “seems to be a different message privately than what he was telling publicly about the vaccine in pregnant women.”
Appearing on Fox News on Tuesday, Bhattacharya, who co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration, summed up the significance of the text messages retrieved from Fauci’s phone.
“The responsible thing to do, that Tony Fauci didn’t do, was to make those concerns that he had public,” he said. “He was a very prominent public figure … he got a presidential medal award for the development of the vaccine. He had a responsibility to the public to tell the public what his thinking actually was, and he failed to do that at the time.”
“And as well he leaned into the mandates, denied natural immunity,” Bhattacharya added. “Essentially, he said that everyone should take this … regardless of the benefit-harm calculation. And I think, to me, that’s the problem. He stepped out of his lane as the head of NIAID, which is supposed to fund the science behind the vaccines, not make recommendations about the vaccines.”
