The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) has “condemned” a new Massachusetts law that expands abortion rights up until birth without restriction and with the approval of a single doctor – one who might even be a late-term abortionist about to earn a substantial fee.
Bill H.5595 was signed into law Monday by Gov. Maura Healey (D) – a self-proclaimed “Catholic” – as Democrats cheered and clapped beside her. Her action allowed the Bay State to become the nation’s 11th to legalize abortion at any point up until birth, without limits.
Members of the ACPeds Board of Directors and Pro-Life Council, including pediatrician Dr. Robin Pierucci, released a statement expressing the group’s condemnation of the law.
“As pediatricians, we care for children at every stage of development, including babies born prematurely at the same gestational ages at which babies in Massachusetts may now be aborted,” Pierucci said, observing that recent “advances in neonatal medicine have made it possible for children born at 24 weeks and even younger to survive and thrive.”
“At the edge of viability, pediatricians and neonatologists routinely care for premature infants, while Massachusetts law now permits an abortion at that same gestational age or later,” she explained. “This is a contradiction in healthcare. The child’s humanity does not change based on whether he or she is inside or outside the womb. The intentional taking of innocent human life is not health care.”
Couched in the left’s rhetoric that equates the taking of an unborn life as “health care,” the law is based on the claim that these late-term abortions are rare and that mothers who make use of late-term abortion do so when they find out, late in their pregnancy, that their baby may have a serious prenatal diagnosis.
This claim, however, has been debunked by the pro-abortion rights Guttmacher Institute and abortionists themselves, such as Ron Fitzsimmons, former Director of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, and Warren Hern.
In 2013, the Guttmacher Institute released a study that found women seeking both first-trimester and late-term abortions provided the same reasons for delaying the procedure, including “not knowing about the pregnancy,” “trouble deciding about the abortion,” and “disagreeing about the abortion with the man involved.”
The study’s researchers concluded, against the claim of abortion rights activists, that “most women seeking later terminations are not doing so for reasons of fetal anomaly or life endangerment.”
Despite all the evidence, Healey said during a press conference that she has heard “heartbreaking stories from women and families who were preparing to welcome a healthy baby into their family, only to receive devastating news later in their pregnancy.”
Instead of having a late-term abortion in Massachusetts, the governor claimed, these women “were forced to travel hundreds of miles and pay out of their pockets while navigating unimaginable grief.”
“That should never happen in Massachusetts,” she added. “This law continues our efforts to have the strongest abortion protections in the country because in Massachusetts, we believe health care decisions should be made between women and their doctors.”
Meanwhile, Catholic leaders are calling upon Boston Archbishop Richard Henning to officially excommunicate Healey.
John Yep, president of leading Catholic advocacy organization Catholics for Catholics, posted on Wednesday a letter to Henning, asserting that Healey is a “self-proclaimed Catholic who, in addition to this recent grievous offense against life, also causes great scandal through her public same-sex relationship with another woman.”
Catholic media LifeSiteNews also created a petition urging Henning to declare Healey’s excommunication.
“Governor Maura Healey has sinned gravely against God by legalizing the killing of babies until birth – thousands of innocent little ones will die an excruciating death in the coming years thanks to this barbarism,” the petition reads and adds:
“Ultimately, Catholics, and especially our bishops, can no longer remain silent as Christ is abandoned, and the deposit of Faith contradicted, by politicians who would kill the least of our brothers and sisters in the womb.”
