  • New Research Raises Questions About Vaccines And Double-Digit Growth In “Red Meat Allergy” Alpha-Gal Syndrome

    A newly released scientific review is shining a light on alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) — an unusual and increasingly common allergy that can make people react to red meat, dairy, and other mammal-derived products hours after eating them.

    Most people who develop AGS get it after being bitten by certain ticks, particularly the Lone Star tick. The tick introduces a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the body, and the immune system can start treating it as a threat. Once sensitized, even a hamburger, steak, or gelatin-containing candy can trigger itching, hives, stomach issues, or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis—often delayed by several hours.

    The new paper, published on Zenodo by researchers including Dr. Peter McCullough, Dr. Harvey Risch, Nicolas Hulscher, and others, explores how this allergy develops and how it might be managed. While it confirms tick bites as the strongest known risk factor, it also focuses on another widespread source of alpha-gal exposure: vaccines.

    Many routine childhood vaccines contain gelatin made from cows or pigs. That gelatin carries the same alpha-gal sugar. Because more than 90% of U.S. children receive these shots, nearly everyone is exposed to alpha-gal through injection long before most people ever get a tick bite.

    The authors propose two possible ways vaccines could play a role:

    1. Direct pathway: Repeated injections of alpha-gal-containing gelatin, delivered straight into the bloodstream or muscle (bypassing the gut’s normal tolerance mechanisms), might train the immune system to produce allergy antibodies (IgE) on their own.
    2. Prime-and-boost pathway: The vaccine doses could expand the pool of immune cells that recognize alpha-gal. Later, a tick bite delivers more of the sugar along with powerful natural immune-stimulating signals from the tick’s saliva, pushing the response over the edge into a full clinical allergy.

    Neither pathway is proven in humans yet. The evidence is largely observational, drawn from animal studies, historical vaccine reactions in Japan, and the fact that gelatin-containing vaccines can trigger reactions in people who already have AGS.

    The researchers emphasize that more direct testing is needed—measuring alpha-gal antibodies before and after vaccination, and quantifying how much of the sugar is actually in vaccine doses and tick saliva.

    For people who already have the syndrome, the practical advice includes strict avoidance of meat, dairy, and gelatin-containing products, plus careful choices when it comes to vaccines and medications. Emerging treatment options such as auricular acupuncture are being explored, but none have large controlled trials yet in AGS patients.

    The near-universal use of gelatin-containing vaccines raises a legitimate scientific question about whether they contribute—either directly or by priming—to AGS sensitization in some people. That's why the authors are calling for targeted research to answer it.
