Here's something you don't hear every day.

There are homeless people living in the Riverside neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut -- a neighborhood that regularly appears in lists of "most expensive zip codes" and "richest towns" in Connecticut.

In fact, as soon as you get off I-95 at Exit 5, you can notice a small encampment with a person sleeping on the ground. Based on the number of packs of empty cigarettes on the ground, it looks like the person has been there for a while. The spot is located right between the southbound and northbound exit ramps, ironically behind the "Welcome to Greenwich" sign.

Should you then decide to go straight off that very same I-95 exit ramp and enter Riverside Commons shopping plaza, you might see another homeless couple who took up residence in a banged up car in the parking lot.

The Centinal spoke with employees from the grocery store, the post office, several restaurants and shops.

They all told us a similar story, but asked that their names be kept out of the press.

As the story goes, several months ago a homeless couple parked in front of the shopping plaza and seemed to be living in their car. An owner of one of the businesses wanted to help the couple, and allegedly paid for them to stay at the Hyatt. However, that was short-lived, as the couple decided they were more comfortable living at Riverside Commons, this time in the parking lot behind the building, well out of the way of prying eyes.

Coincidentally, while interviewing employees who worked in the shopping plaza, three police officers pulled into the back parking lot. They had been sent on an unrelated call to check out something suspicious in the front parking lot.

The Centinal alerted the officers about the homeless couple in the back parking lot, and showed them the location of the vehicle. The windows were all effectively blocked, either with cardboard or by heavy tinting, so you couldn't tell if the couple was inside at the time.

We didn't stay to watch, but we did also let the officers know about the homeless man living in-between the I-95 exit ramps across the street from the plaza. The officers promised to take a look, but when we revisited both places later in the day, nothing had changed.
