I do not believe that it is incumbent on our government to supply housing for the people, whether that be affordable or luxury. This concept has created a generational cycle of government dependency. It has also opened the door to government overreach and crippling mandates.
Our system provides for non-governmental charities to fill that role. Examples being the Catholic Church, local community organizations and Veteran's groups. The character of our communities was forged and paid for by previous generations of homeowners and taxpayers.
As we have come to a point in our state where government has overstepped on housing, Hartford's power should be limited. Zoning is something that is best controlled by the locally elected representatives of the citizens. Local leaders have a better understanding of the limits of existing infrastructures and the collateral costs that must be borne by expanding beyond current capacities.
While democrats say they protect local zoning, the truth is quite the opposite.
In fact my opponent, State Rep. Hector Arzeno voted in favor of the "work-live-ride" bill, HB 5390, that would pave the way for high rises around train stations in Greenwich, forever changing our community, making it look more like New Rochelle, NY.
Trigger words like “overly restrictive” only make it more difficult to foster common sense discussions. The first step is to determine whether there is a problem that the residents must (or want to) address. Second, how can we solve that problem and what alternative solutions exist. Third, how will the solutions be funded.
We live in a system of economics that leaves many choices for housing up to individuals. Location is an amenity that is highly prized in Real Estate and, therefore, desirable locations are more expensive. The idea of punishing those who have achieved success simply because they are successful is antithetic to our democratic system.
The idea of giving a helping hand to those who need it is a societal imperative that should be, and is supported by the generosity of the American people. Helping not just the poor but also struggling working class families, the elderly and of course our veterans is of paramount importance to the charities that we all support.
Please help me protect Greenwich by making a plan to vote early, beginning October 21st.
That way, families in communities like Greenwich will have a voice in Hartford that truly represents them.
